Trade
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has forwarded Nikita Soshnikov to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Toronto now holds eight picks in the 2019 NHL Draft. Soshnikov, 24, has skated in three games with the Maple Leafs this season. He was placed on the injured reserve list on 12 December due to a lower body injury and has missed 28 matches due to injury. Nizhny Tagil, a Russian native also appeared in 19 games with the Toronto Marlies (AHL), recording 17 points (7 goals, 10 assists) and 12 penalty minutes.
The Maple Leafs return to action in Pittsburgh on February 17th when they take on the Penguins at 7:00 p.m.
Scouting report
To be fair, there aren’t a lot of scouting reports of Soshnikov, as he was not a draft prospect and has played a whole lot overseas. But on his recent ranking of the Leafs’ prospects, Corey Proneman called him the 10th ranked prospect in the system, saying “[Soshnikov] will need some time in North America before he is ready to make an NHL impact, but He has equipment that has above-average or better speed and puck skills, although he has work to do to perfect his game.”
To our liking, that’s a pretty solid compliment to a man who’s worth nothing but a contract. A free wallet, as they say.

Contract
According to his Gold Star Hockey agent Dan Milstein, the 28-year-old forward has signed a one-year deal with the New York Islanders. Chris Johnston of Northstar Bets said the one-sided deal is worth $750K.
The team has also confirmed one-year contracts for Corey Schneider and Parker Woderspoon, although this does not include any financial details. CapFriendly notes that Schneider’s one-year, two-way contract is worth $750K in the NHL and $400K in the minor leagues, while PuckPedia says Wotherspoon’s deal will pay $750K in the NHL, $175K in the minors, And it’s guaranteed for $225K.

Lou Lamorillo, of course, has experience with Soshnikov from his time as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and will now see the talented forward compete for another NHL opportunity.
In last season’s 33 games between CSKA Moscow and Avangard Omsk, Soshnikov scored just 16 points. However, production improved in the playoffs, where he posted five goals and eight points in just 13 games. With a history of success in 87 games from the KHL and NHL experience, it seems like a worthwhile gamble for an organization that requires some secondary scoring.
Schneider and Woderspoon will meanwhile lead the minor leagues, as Lamoriello recently hinted at. The veteran netminder did well last year with the Bridgeport Islanders, posting .921 in 30 matches.
