Former Alabama football coach Nick Saban has identified a major concern surrounding the Crimson Tide that goes beyond the spotlight on quarterback Keelon Russell.
Saban discussed Russell during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. While he praised the young quarterback’s talent, Saban suggested that the success of Alabama’s offense could ultimately depend on how well its offensive line performs.
Nick Saban Highlights Alabama’s Offensive Line
Saban described Russell as a highly talented player and pointed to his ability to create plays when a designed play breaks down. However, the former Alabama coach believes the offensive line could have a significant influence on how successful Russell is during the 2026 season.
The Crimson Tide are entering the season with just one returning starter along the offensive line. Michael Carroll is back and has moved inside to right guard, while Alabama is also expected to rely on transfers Jayvin James and Racin Delgatty.
Jackson Lloyd and William Sanders are the other projected starters.
That combination of newcomers and returning players leaves Alabama with an important challenge as it prepares for the season.
Keelon Russell Enters the Spotlight
Russell has generated considerable excitement around Alabama football. He is regarded as the highest-rated recruit in program history, according to 247Sports, and appeared in two games as a freshman in 2025.
Although his opportunities were limited last season, Russell recorded two touchdown passes and now takes over as Alabama’s starting quarterback.
Saban believes Russell’s ability to make plays outside the structure of the offense could become particularly valuable if the offensive line struggles to consistently protect him.
That makes the matchup between Alabama’s new-look offensive line and Russell an important storyline to monitor.
Saban’s Assessment Goes Beyond the Quarterback
With Russell receiving much of the attention, Saban’s comments offer a different perspective on Alabama’s offense.
The former Crimson Tide coach essentially argued that the quarterback position cannot be evaluated separately from the offensive line. If Alabama gives Russell enough time in the pocket, his talent could allow the offense to operate at a high level.
But if protection breaks down regularly, Russell may be forced to rely heavily on his improvisational ability.
For Alabama, improving the offensive line could therefore be just as important as Russell’s development.
Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin’s Alabama Connection
Saban has also been back in the headlines because of stories surrounding his former Alabama assistant Lane Kiffin.
Kiffin worked under Saban in Tuscaloosa as Alabama’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. According to a Vanity Fair account cited in recent coverage, Saban was concerned about Kiffin’s behavior away from the football field during that period and wanted staff members to keep him away from college students at local bars.
Kiffin’s personal struggles during his Alabama tenure have been discussed publicly in the years since. His family did not move to Tuscaloosa when he joined Alabama in 2014, and he and Layla Reaves divorced in 2016.
Reports have described Kiffin spending considerable time at Tuscaloosa bars during that period. He was also associated with the nickname “Joey Freshwater,” although Kiffin has denied using that alias.
Despite the controversy surrounding his time in Tuscaloosa, Kiffin’s coaching career continued to progress. He later coached at Florida Atlantic before taking over at Ole Miss, where he remained through 2025. He subsequently became LSU’s head coach on a reported seven-year, $91 million contract.
Alabama Football Faces an Important Test
As Alabama prepares for East Carolina, Russell will naturally remain one of the biggest storylines. However, Saban’s comments underline why the offensive line deserves just as much attention.
A talented quarterback can change a game, but his effectiveness can be heavily influenced by the protection in front of him.
For Alabama, the development of its offensive line could determine how quickly Russell can settle into his new role and how dangerous the Crimson Tide offense becomes during the 2026 season.
Saban’s message is clear: while Russell’s talent is exciting, Alabama’s bigger offensive question may be whether the players protecting him can consistently give him the time and stability needed to succeed
