Trades today:

Another trade deadline has come and gone, this one mildly eventful. The Rams, as they are wont to do, made the biggest splash by trading for Broncos edge rusher Von Miller, showing that Los Angeles likes its chances in a competitive NFC, if also revealing its loose-at-best understanding of the plot of Rounders.

Other moves drew fewer headlines, but all have the potential to move the needle in one direction or the other. Welcome to Winners and Losers, trade deadline edition.

Week 9 picks:

The N.F.L.’s trade deadline was as notable for the players who didn’t get moved as for the players who did. The Los Angeles Rams added the Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller to an already tremendous defense, but the long-rumored Miami Dolphins trade for Deshaun Watson did not come to pass, and Odell Beckham Jr. is still (at least nominally) a member of the Cleveland Browns.

This week’s injured/Covid-list designations have had a greater effect on betting lines than the league’s trades: The Tennessee Titans will try to remain relevant without Derrick Henry, and Aaron Rodgers’s positive coronavirus test has tremendously swung the odds of Kansas City beating his Green Bay Packers.

NFL point spreads Week 9

Game Spread
New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts IND -10.5
Houston Texans at Miami Dolphins MIA -6.5
Denver Broncos at Dallas Cowboys DAL -10
Minnesota Vikings at Baltimore Ravens BAL -5.5
New England Patriots at Carolina Panthers NE -4

Injuries are also playing a key role in some of these games. We’re still waiting to see whether Kyler Murray suits up for the Cardinals after suffering an ankle injury last Thursday. We’re also going to get our first look at the Titans without Derrick Henry available against a formidable Rams defense. So, while the spreads in those games might normally look skewed, it’s because of those injuries.

NFL money lines Week 9

Game Moneyline
New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts IND -560
Houston Texans at Miami Dolphins MIA -290
Denver Broncos at Dallas Cowboys DAL -450
Minnesota Vikings at Baltimore Ravens BAL -230
New England Patriots at Carolina Panthers NE -194
Buffalo Bills at Jacksonville Jaguars BUF -1100
Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals CIN -152

A 7.5-point spread is an ugly number, but the Rams should have a chance to win this one big because of Derrick Henry’s injury, which figures to loom large for the Titans. After all, he had accounted for nearly 80 percent of Tennessee’s rushing yards and out-carried all other Titans running backs 219 to 11 before suffering a broken foot.
