Tragedy struck the NFL’s caretaker family last Sunday, as replay official Carl Madsen died on his way home from the Kansas City Chiefs vs Tennessee Titans matchup in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 71 years old.

“Karl Madsen was the NFL’s caretaker fixture for more than two decades, first as a highly respected on-field official before transitioning to a replay role beginning in 2009,” said Walt Anderson, senior VP of caretaker training and development. said in a statement. “A prolific friend and colleague, Carl’s love of football and dedication to stewardship was always present, as he generously shared his time advising young officers in clinics across the country. Madsen served as an on-field and off-field officer for nearly 25 years. According to NFL.com, he spent 12 seasons as an on-field referee from 1997 to 2008 before transitioning as a replay official in 2009.

NFL Referees Association president Scott Green also issued a statement on Madsen’s passing, according to Pro Football Talk.

“Karl will be remembered by the people who worked with him on the field and in replays,” Green said. He had a nickname among his fellow officers of the “Big Country” that was related not only to his size but to his large personality as a warm and generous man.

The details surrounding Madsen’s death are unknown. He was the most experienced of the league’s replay officials.
