What happened to

Nathan Cleary

Cleary has not played since dislocating his shoulder twice and tearing his labrum against the Maroons in Origin II a month ago. The 23-year-old is ahead of schedule, passing the ball and dominating in the gym as he works to recover from an injury that nearly ended his season.

Hospital

Nathan Cleary

Cleary has been dealing with a shoulder issue for the most of the season and will require surgery at the end. The Panthers have also paid the price for having to fight their way to the grand final after losing to the Rabbitohs in week one.

During the TV commentary, Cleary’s NSW coach Brad Fittler disclosed that the small halfback’s face had become so awful due to cellulitis that he had required urgent medical attention the night before the South Sydney match.

Injury

Nathan Cleary

Nathan Cleary, the Clive Churchill Medallist, has been scheduled for surgery after subluxing his shoulder and tearing cartilage in State of Origin II in late June. “I believe there were at least five players that shouldn’t have been on the field today.”

Ivan Cleary, Penrith’s coach, has disclosed that at least five of his damaged players “shouldn’t have been playing” in Sunday’s grand final, but overcame injuries to help the Panthers win the title “purely on courage.”

Surgery

As he undergoes shoulder surgery in Brisbane next Wednesday, Penrith are optimistic that superstar halfback Nathan Cleary will be healthy for the start of their title defence.

Cleary has scheduled an appointment with orthopaedic surgeon Tony O’Neill, who will fix his labrum (the cartilage that encircles the shoulder socket) and reattach the supraspinatus tendon at the rear of the shoulder, which was also torn.
