Rafael Nadal will return to Grand Slam action at the 2022 Australian Open in January as he continues his quest for a 21st major title.

Nadal cut back his 2021 season in August, citing an ongoing leg injury as the main issue.

After winning the Barcelona Open and the Italian Open, Nadal lost an epic semifinal to rival Novak Djokovic at the French Open – a result that marked his third defeat at Roland Garros.

That campaign appeared to have taken its toll on the Spaniard physically, and he later withdrew from both Wimbledon and the Olympic Games, citing schedule reasons.

After further injury problems, Nadal withdrew from Toronto and Cincinnati and announced on August 20 that his season was over.

Now, after five months of rest and recovery, the 35-year-old will return to Grand Slam action at the Australian Open as he looks to make a sensational return to the winning circle.

With both Djokovic and Roger Federer out in Melbourne, Nadal is aiming to claim an outright lead in the Grand Slam champions list, with the trio currently level off on 20 titles.

Nadal hasn’t played his best tennis, but has found ways to win. His quarterfinal against Denis Shapovalov was a perfect example of him being on the ropes and failing to capitalize on his opponent.

He won his semi-final against Matteo Berrettini in relaxed fashion, mostly due to his opponent’s unforced errors and Nadal’s relentless exploits of his backhand.

It will be Nadal’s sixth final in Melbourne, but he only has one title – hard courts have not been his strength in recent years, but he is 9-0 to start 2022, winning the title in Sydney, And Shapovalov, despite leaving the set against Khachanov.

Jim: This match will probably be decided by whoever does better that day. There isn’t much of it on paper and both are definitely enough to win. That said, Medvedev should be considered the coming favorite in the match. The Russian, at least in recent years, has a remarkably better hard-court record than Nadal and his game looks better suited for this surface than that of the great Spaniard. It may well be close, but hopefully Medvedev will have just that.

Stein: With Nadal facing off 3-1 including a US Open final win in 2019, the Spanish giant has not had a completely flawless tournament as both Denis Shapovalov and Matteo Berrettini challenged him in back to back matches. However he dug deep to win those matches and went undefeated this season.

Medvedev has his share of battles to make it through to reach his second consecutive Australian Open final from Nick Kyrgios, Maxim Cressi, Felix Auger-Aliasime and semifinalist Stefanos Tsitsipas. It would be a great achievement for Nadal to win this title 12 years (!) after his 2009 victory, but it certainly won’t shock me. Medvedev is the strongest player on the hard court these days but Nadal’s experience and drive is strong enough to get him over the line.
