He served as the head coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, leading them to their first NBA championship in 2021. Before joining the Bucks, he worked with the Atlanta Hawks for five seasons and the San Antonio Spurs for 19 seasons. While with the Spurs, he started as an alternate video coordinator for two seasons before becoming an assistant coach under head coach Gregg Popovich.

In April, there was news about the death of Budenholzer’s brother in a car accident shortly before Game 4 of the Milwaukee Bucks’ series against the Miami Heat. Budenholzer comes from a family of seven siblings, and he chose not to disclose the information about his brother’s passing. It was only later revealed by Darvin Ham, the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Budenholzer is a father of four children: William Vincent, Savoia Elizabeth, Hanna Louise, and John Bent. Sadly, just before game four against the Miami Heat in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs on April 24, one of Budenholzer’s siblings passed away in a car accident.

Mike Budenholzer experienced a family tragedy when he lost one of his brothers in a car accident just prior to Game 4 against the Heat, while he was coaching for the Bucks.
