Florida State has fired athletic director Michael Alford, ending his tenure as the university faces mounting pressure over its football program, athletic spending and financial challenges.
The decision was announced Monday, September 14, with Florida State president Richard McCullough thanking Alford for his work with the university and its student-athletes. Senior associate athletics director Bruce Warwick will serve as the interim athletic director while the school begins a national search for Alford’s permanent replacement.

Michael Alford had served as Florida State’s athletic director since January 2022 after succeeding David Coburn. Before becoming AD, Alford arrived in Tallahassee in 2020 to lead Seminoles Boosters.
His departure comes at a difficult time for FSU, particularly because of the football team’s dramatic decline following its breakthrough 2023 campaign.
Florida State finished 13-0 and won the ACC in 2023, but the Seminoles missed the four-team College Football Playoff and suffered a 63-3 loss to Georgia in the Orange Bowl. Since then, the football team has posted an 8-18 record.
The latest setback came when FSU lost 27-24 at home to SMU on Labor Day, increasing pressure on the athletic department and head coach Mike Norvell.

Board of Trustees chairman Peter Collins also described the leadership change as part of a broader restructuring effort designed to help FSU compete in the modern college sports environment.

Norvell has come under increasing pressure after Florida State’s 8-18 record since the beginning of the 2024 season. The Seminoles also finished 5-7 last season before the university decided to retain the coach.
However, Alford’s dismissal means the decision regarding Norvell’s future will now be handled by university leadership and ultimately the incoming athletic director.

Since 2022, total athletics revenue increased by 31.5%, according to the supplied report, while conference distributions increased 19% following a new ACC revenue model that Alford helped design.
Before joining FSU, Alford was athletic director at Central Michigan from 2017 to 2020 and previously worked as an associate athletic director at Oklahoma from 2012 to 2017.
