The McCaffrey brothers are making headlines after San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey and Washington Commanders wide receiver Luke McCaffrey faced each other for the first time in an NFL game on Monday Night Football. The historic matchup brought a special moment for the family, which has built a strong football legacy across multiple generations.
Christian and Luke grew up competing against each other in Colorado, but their professional careers took different paths. Now, with Christian playing for the 49ers and Luke representing Washington, the brothers finally shared the field as opponents in the NFL.
McCaffrey Brothers Make History in 49ers vs. Commanders Game
The 49ers and Commanders matchup was particularly meaningful because Christian and Luke McCaffrey had never faced each other in a competitive NFL game before Monday night.
Christian, one of the league’s most established running backs, entered the contest with considerable experience and a reputation for making an impact as both a runner and receiver. Luke, meanwhile, continued building his career as a wide receiver with Washington.
Before the game, Christian explained that playing against his younger brother would complete a unique chapter in their football journeys. The siblings had spent years competing in different sports and training together, making their first NFL meeting a memorable occasion.
The game also created an interesting storyline for fans searching for the latest 49ers game today updates, the Niner game score and the Washington Commanders vs. San Francisco 49ers matchup.
Who Are the McCaffrey Brothers?
Christian McCaffrey has three brothers: Max, Dylan and Luke. They are the sons of former NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey and Lisa McCaffrey, a former Stanford soccer player.
All four brothers grew up in Colorado and attended Valor Christian High School. Football played a major role in their childhood, and each pursued the sport at different levels.
Here is a closer look at the McCaffrey brothers and their football careers.
Christian McCaffrey: San Francisco 49ers Running Back
Christian McCaffrey is the most widely recognized member of the family. He established himself as a star running back after playing college football at Stanford before entering the NFL.
Known for his versatility, Christian can contribute through rushing attempts, receptions and plays in the open field. His ability to influence multiple areas of the offense has made him an important part of the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive system under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
The 49ers rely on McCaffrey’s versatility to create mismatches against opposing defenses. His performance is frequently a major talking point whenever fans follow the forty niners, particularly during nationally televised games.
His matchup against Luke was especially significant because it gave the brothers an opportunity to compete against each other at the highest level of professional football.
Luke McCaffrey: Washington Commanders Wide Receiver
Luke McCaffrey is the youngest of the four brothers and plays wide receiver for the Washington Commanders.
He began his college career at Nebraska before transferring to Rice University. Washington selected him in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, giving him an opportunity to establish himself in the professional game.
Unlike Christian, who plays running back, Luke works primarily as a receiver. His role requires him to create separation from defenders, run routes and contribute to Washington’s passing attack.
The Commanders’ matchup against San Francisco gave Luke a chance to share the field with his older brother in a regular-season NFL game for the first time.
The family milestone also brought additional attention to the Commanders injury report and the 49ers injury report, as fans looked for player availability information ahead of the contest.
Max McCaffrey: From NFL Player to Coach
Max McCaffrey, the oldest brother, pursued a professional football career after playing wide receiver at Duke University.
He signed with the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and later spent time with several NFL organizations, including the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers.
After his playing career, Max moved into coaching. He previously worked with his father at the University of Northern Colorado and later joined the Miami Dolphins as an offensive assistant.
In 2026, Max became the Los Angeles Chargers’ running backs coach, continuing the family’s connection to professional football from a different position.
Dylan McCaffrey: College Football Quarterback
Dylan McCaffrey also pursued football at the college level. Born on March 25, 1999, he played quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines before transferring to the University of Northern Colorado.
At Northern Colorado, Dylan played under his father, Ed, providing a different experience from his brothers’ professional careers.
He did not advance to the NFL as a player, but his college football journey remains an important part of the McCaffrey family’s sporting history.
Ed McCaffrey and Lisa McCaffrey’s Influence
The McCaffrey family’s football background extends beyond the four brothers.
Ed McCaffrey enjoyed a successful NFL career as a wide receiver and won three Super Bowl championships. His professional experience helped introduce his sons to the demands of competitive football from an early age.
Lisa McCaffrey also played a significant role in the brothers’ athletic development. A former Stanford soccer player, she brought her own sporting experience to the family.
Growing up together, the brothers regularly competed in football, basketball, snow games and video games. Their competitive relationship continued into adulthood, with the siblings supporting each other’s milestones despite playing for different teams.
Christian’s wedding in 2024 also brought the family together, with Max, Luke and Dylan serving as groomsmen.
Christian and Luke McCaffrey’s First NFL Matchup
The first NFL meeting between Christian and Luke was the central storyline surrounding Monday Night Football’s 49ers vs. Commanders contest.
Christian had previously played with and against other members of his family at different stages of his football career. However, his younger brother Luke had followed a different route through college football and the NFL, preventing them from meeting on the field until this game.
Their first matchup was about more than the final score. It represented years of family competition, training and shared ambition finally coming together on an NFL stage.
The brothers were not necessarily expected to line up directly against each other on every play because they occupy different offensive positions. Nevertheless, playing for opposing teams made the occasion special.
The game also highlighted how three McCaffrey brothers have remained connected to the NFL, with Christian and Luke playing and Max working as a coach.
