The Boston Celtics point guard had one of his best all-round performances of the postseason in a Game 6 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday, scoring 21 points on 8 shootings from 16 — 5 of 9 from 3-point range — with a team -High seven assists in 40 minutes.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Smart played well at the Fischer Forum in Milwaukee on Friday, but it may be in reference to how little rest he’s had since Boston’s surprise blow in Game 5 on Wednesday.

During his freshman year at Oklahoma State, Smart led the Cowboys to a 24–8 record and finished third in the Big 12 behind Kansas and Kansas State. Smart averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game and led the Big 12 in steals, where he recorded 99 and averaged 3.0 per game. Smart and the Cowboys earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament that year, securing a 5th seed in the Midwest region. However, during the first round of the tournament, the Cowboys were eliminated by 12 seed Oregon. On April 17, 2013, Smart held a press conference at the student union at OSU and announced that he would not announce the NBA draft and would, instead, return to OSU for his sophomore season. His 99 steals set a new record in the Big 12.

On November 19, 2013, Smart tied an OSU single game scoring record with 39 points, surpassing his 7 Oklahoma State Cowboys past 11 Memphis. On February 8, 2014, during a game at Texas Tech, Smart pushed a fan into the stands after a verbal brawl in the closing minutes of the game, and received a technical foul. A post-game report said Smart claimed that the fan had racially abused her. At a press conference the following afternoon, Smart would not comment on that element of the controversy, and coach Travis Ford decided not to address it. The fan denied using racial slurs and said he called Smart “a piece of crap”. The audio of the incident corroborated the fan’s account. [10] Smart was later suspended for three games and the fans agreed not to participate in any further Texas Tech games during the 2013–14 season.

Contract

Boston Celtics veteran guard Marcus Smart signed a four-year, $77 million contract extension this off-season to remain with the team.

But Smart recently revealed that he was close to walking away from the franchise he called home for his entire seven-year career. In an interview with The Athletic’s Jay King, Smart said he “strongly considered” the Celtics’ contract offer in hopes of pursuing a deal less than $90 million.

“For me, it was, I have to pay,” Smart said. “I have to get mine. Everyone in my position that I’ve dominated is getting it. And it’s like, I know I do so much more than these guys. I’m on a better team too.” So it’s like, what’s going on?”
