When it comes to Notre Dame’s Fiesta Bowl defeat at the hands of Oklahoma State, I’ll have a lot to say in our post-game shows and articles over the next two days. Simply put, this should not have happened. I have a lot to say about what went wrong with the game, but this defeat is just the beginning of Marcus Freeman’s tenure.

Freeman would ultimately not be judged by this defeat, and the Notre Dame program under his leadership would not be judged by this one game. However, that and the program should be evaluated based on how they respond.

The year before Nick Saban had won multiple national titles in Alabama, his team was dominated by Utah (31–17), which came just after being whipped by Florida (31–20) in the SEC title game.

On January 8, 2021, it was announced that Freeman had been appointed as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. It was said that Freeman was Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly’s top choice for the position.  It was announced following reports that he would join LSU as their defensive coordinator.

On December 3, 2021, Freeman was promoted to become the 30th head coach at the University of Notre Dame, replacing Brian Kelly, who went on to become head coach at Louisiana State University.  Freeman is the second African-American to lead the Irish, the first being Tyrone Willingham. His first game as head coach was the 2022 Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma State University.

Freeman married his wife, Joanna in 2010, whom he had dated since college. The couple has six children: Vinny, Sienna, Gino, Nico, Capri and Rocco.

Well, we obviously didn’t finish. The result was not what we wanted. We are obviously disappointed. I think the kids have prepared well. I thought the coaching staff did a great job, but at the end of the day, when it matters the most, we didn’t execute. But these guys, man, this is a special group and the ones who aren’t coming back are going to be missed. More than anything, there is a group that I think is one, disappointed, but two, inspired. Inspired to correct what happened today and start making progress for the future. As I told them 28 days ago, it’s about now, it was about ending this season the right way. Well, that didn’t happen and that’s okay. Now we can just start focusing on what we’ll do as we move forward to make sure we’re successful the next time we’re on the field
