Manchester City produced an eight-goal spectacle at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, beating Sunderland 5-3 in one of the most entertaining Premier League matches of the season so far. The result sends Man City three points clear at the top of the Premier League table heading into the international break.
The victory was anything but straightforward for Manchester City, who repeatedly allowed Sunderland back into the contest. Antoine Semenyo scored twice, while Enzo Fernández, Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland were also on target for the hosts.
For Sunderland, Brian Brobbey was the standout performer. The Dutch striker scored a remarkable hat-trick, becoming the first Sunderland player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Jermain Defoe in 2016.
Man City Take Early Lead Through Enzo Fernández
Man City vs Sunderland began at a frantic pace, with the home side taking the lead after just nine minutes.
Enzo Fernández produced an inventive free-kick from an acute angle, catching Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs by surprise as the ball found the near corner. It was Fernández’s first goal for City since scoring for Argentina in the World Cup semi-final against England.
Sunderland responded quickly, however. Enzo Le Fée delivered a precise pass behind the City defence, allowing Brian Brobbey to break through and finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Cherki and Semenyo Put City Back Ahead
Manchester City regained the advantage in the 29th minute following pressure in Sunderland’s defensive third.
Rayan Cherki collected the ball inside the area, created space for himself and fired a low shot into the corner to make it 2-1.
But Sunderland refused to retreat. Thomas Meunier found space on the right before sending the ball across the box, where Brobbey was perfectly positioned to score his second of the afternoon.
After a VAR review, the goal stood.
City eventually restored their lead shortly before half-time. A chaotic sequence inside the Sunderland penalty area ended with Antoine Semenyo reacting quickest to fire home and make it 3-2.
Brian Brobbey Completes Sunderland Hat-Trick
The second half continued in the same chaotic fashion.
Semenyo struck again in the 57th minute, producing a composed finish into the far corner to give Manchester City a 4-2 advantage.
Yet Sunderland immediately responded.
Granit Xhaka’s delivery from the right was helped on inside the box, and Brian Brobbey completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute. His third goal made him the first Sunderland player since Defoe to score three times in a Premier League match.
Brobbey’s performance was enough for him to receive the Flashscore Man of the Match award despite Sunderland ultimately suffering defeat.
Haaland Seals Man City’s Victory
Sunderland continued to threaten after Brobbey’s third goal, with City showing defensive vulnerability on several occasions.
One of the biggest scares came when Dan Ballard won a header following a Donnarumma error, only for Rúben Dias to clear the ball off the line.
Manchester City finally secured the result in the 81st minute.
Jérémy Doku’s involvement helped create space on the left before Josko Gvardiol delivered toward the far post. Erling Haaland finished the move to make it 5-3.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but VAR overturned the decision.
It was also Haaland’s first Premier League goal against Sunderland, meaning the Black Cats became the final team he had faced in the competition without scoring against before this match.
What the Man City vs Sunderland Result Means
The Man City vs Sunderland clash provided plenty of attacking quality but also exposed defensive problems for the home side.
Manchester City now sit three points clear at the Premier League summit going into the three-week international break. Sunderland, meanwhile, leave the Etihad disappointed despite producing an impressive attacking display.
For Man City, the major positive is the three points and the opportunity to move ahead at the top after Arsenal’s defeat to Brighton.
For Sunderland, Brian Brobbey‘s hat-trick will be remembered despite the final result, while the team’s ability to repeatedly exploit openings in the City defence will offer encouragement for the matches ahead.
The Premier League now pauses for the international break before returning on October 10.
