Madison Keys began her 2026 US Open campaign Tuesday against rising Russian player Alina Korneeva, with their first-round matchup taking place at Arthur Ashe Stadium as rain disrupted much of the tournament schedule in New York.
Persistent showers that started Monday night delayed matches on the outside courts, leaving Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium as the main venues able to host matches because of their retractable roofs.

Madison Keys entered the US Open as the No. 22 seed and brought extensive Grand Slam experience into her meeting with Korneeva.
Keys arrived in New York with a 33-14 record for the 2026 season. She has also produced solid results at the year’s other three Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon.
The American also won a WTA 250 title in Eastbourne earlier this season.
Her preparation for the US Open was less consistent. Keys suffered early defeats in Washington and Toronto before recovering in Cincinnati, where she reached the quarterfinals and eventually lost to Sara Bejlek in three sets.
Korneeva Tennis Rise Adds Intrigue
The development of Korneeva tennis has been one of the more interesting stories of the 2026 season.
Korneeva started the year ranked outside the world’s top 200 but climbed rapidly into the top 70 ahead of the US Open. The 19-year-old entered the tournament with a 37-14 record.
Her recent results have shown that she can challenge established players. Korneeva reached the semifinals in Athens and advanced to the round of 16 in Toronto, collecting notable victories over Ann Li, Emma Navarro and Iva Jovic.
Those performances make Korneeva a potentially difficult first-round opponent despite her limited Grand Slam experience.

Madison Keys was the clear favorite heading into the matchup, largely because of her experience and record on hard courts.

The statistics also revealed an interesting contrast between the two players. Keys had won 60.4% of her service points on hard courts in 2026, compared with 54.6% for Korneeva.
Korneeva, however, had been considerably stronger on return, winning 54.9% of return points compared with 43.5% for Keys.

Rain delayed matches across the tournament grounds, with showers expected to remain a threat through the middle of the week. The retractable roofs at Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium allowed some matches to proceed despite the conditions.
Several notable players were forced to wait for their matches, including No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina, Belinda Bencic and Maria Sakkari.
The evening schedule was also expected to feature major names, including 2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff and men’s No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev.
What Madison Keys Needs to Do
Keys’ biggest advantage is her experience at the highest level of the sport. Her powerful serve and aggressive baseline game can put immediate pressure on opponents, particularly on hard courts.
However, Korneeva’s recent form means Keys cannot afford to overlook the teenager.
The Russian has demonstrated that she can compete against top-level opponents, while her strong return numbers could make Keys work hard to protect her service games.
For Korneeva, the match provides an opportunity to make a statement at her fourth Grand Slam main-draw appearance. For Keys, it is the first step toward another deep US Open run.
