Serbian CrossFit athlete Lazar Dukic, 28, died Thursday during a CrossFit Games swimming competition in Fort Worth, Texas, forcing the cancellation of the rest of the day’s events.

Lazar Dukic, who was competing in the 2024 CrossFit Games, died by drowning in a Fort Worth, Texas lake during the opening day of competition on Thursday.
CrossFit officials said Dukic, 28, of Serbia, died during the first event, which was a 3 1/2-mile run followed by a half-mile swim in Marine Creek Lake.
Dukic was pronounced dead at 10:24 a.m., according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
On Wednesday, Dukic posted on Instagram that his goal was to reach the podium at the 2024 CrossFit Games along with his brother Luca, who was also competing.
Officials canceled the remaining events scheduled for Thursday and have not yet decided whether the remainder of the multi-day competition will go ahead.

“CrossFit is deeply saddened by the death of a CrossFit Games competitor during the swimming portion of Individual Event 1 at the 2024 CrossFit Games,” the organization said in a statement. “We are cooperating fully with the authorities and doing everything we can to support the family at this time. Today’s remaining programs have been postponed. The well-being of the competitors is our first priority and we are saddened by this tragic incident.”
