Ethiopia’s star sprinter Lamecha Girma walked off the track on a stretcher after a hard fall while attempting to clear a hurdle on the back of the final lap in the 3000m men’s steeplechase on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old was speeding down the straight back, jumping over the hurdles while competitors were on his left and right. It appeared that Girma clipped the barrier with his right knee and landed directly on his upper body.

Lamecha Girma Injury: Update| Report| Head

Ethiopia’s world record holder hospitalized in Paris after horrific fall in the final lap of the Olympic steeplechase finals

Lamecha Girma appears to have made a good recovery overnight after a terrifying fall in the closing stages of the Olympic 3000m steeplechase final.

The world record holder hit the last barrier from behind on the final lap straight after covering more than 200 metres, and fell to the ground, where he lay motionless for a few moments until doctors attended to him.

As Sufyan El Bakkali won the gold medal ahead of Kenneth Rooks – the lead athlete was unaware of Girma’s condition – a brace was placed over the Ethiopian’s head as he was dragged away.

Widespread concern continued for the next hour or so until reports emerged that he was conscious and responding well to treatment at the hospital.

Overnight his management agency released a statement, saying: “Horrible scenes in Paris last night. After a complete medical examination at night, it was confirmed that Lemecha had not suffered any major head injury. He will undergo further scans to check his leg before being allowed to leave the hospital. Thank you to the French medical team and everyone for your support.

Report

An update has been reported on the health of Ethiopian athlete Lamecha Girma after a fatal fall in the men’s 3000 meters steeplechase.

Girma, who had won a silver medal in the same event at Tokyo 2020, looked set to compete for the gold medal by reaching the final directly.

But he passed the third-to-last hurdle and lost his balance, taking a terrible fall straight onto his back.

Fortunately, no other athletes stepped on Girma, who was running in second place before the fall, and he received prompt treatment from on-site medical staff at the Stade de France.
