After their impressive win in Oklahoma City on Saturday, the Philadelphia 76ers returned to their home field on Monday. Next on the schedule was a meeting with LeBron James and the LA Lakers.
The Sixers were able to take a big lead from the opening end. They managed to keep their foot on the gas and win in impressive fashion in front of a nationally televised audience.
Thanks to big nights from several Sixers, they were able to defeat the Lakers by a final score of 138–94. Some important things gained from this victory are as follows.
Box score
The box score Lakers vs Sixers tells part of the story. The 76ers hit 22 3-pointers compared to only seven for the Lakers, and even when Embiid sat out the entire fourth quarter, the 76ers still outrebounded them 40-14.
“We got killed at the 3-point line,” James said. “They opened fire. Give them credit.”
Of the rest? It was a tepid effort from a team that looked like it had resigned early – the 76ers were ahead by 25 in the first half – meaning it was too good a night to concede defeat.
“Your competitive spirit has to be at a high level,” Lakers coach Darwin Ham said. “It should almost be bulletproof to some extent. You have to respond to strength with strength. They outwitted us.”
Embiid, the reigning NBA MVP, finished with 30 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists for his sixth career triple-double. It was Embiid’s first of the season and his seventh career game with more than 10 assists.
Embiid’s anticipated matchup with James never really came to fruition. James scored 18 points in 29 minutes but none of his efforts could make a dent in the 76ers’ lead. He has now played more minutes than any player in NBA history, including playoff time.
“It doesn’t mean much to me,” James said.
Tyrese Maxey scored 31 points for the 76ers. Anthony Davis had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers.
The 76ers started the game with 3-pointers and hit 13 of 26 shots, a season high for the half.
Maxi hit a four. However, the Lakers didn’t leave any Sixers named Maxi or Embiid open and paid for it. Patrick Beverley had three in the half and Marcus Morris Sr. was 3 for 3. Embiid scored on a run for the lead, 64-39.

LeBron-less Lakers got off to a good start
The struggling Lakers didn’t need any more bad news coming tonight, but LeBron James arrived late. Frank Vogel’s team battled without James and Anthony Davis, who is close to returning, but did not suit up for the game against Philly.
It was Stanley Johnson who filled James’ place in the starting five and it was Stanley Johnson who got the Lakers off to a hot start. The former Arizona Wildcats hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points in the first quarter, giving the Lakers a three-point lead after 12 minutes.
As strange as it sounds, Los Angeles’ offense looked good without LeBron to start the game. There was more passing and movement on the ball with their star out. Sometimes the Lakers may be guilty of staring at LeBron.
Maxi makes up for Harden’s cold start
While James Harden had a rough start to the night in his hometown, hitting only one of his first seven shots, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey carried the burden of taking the lead in the second quarter.
Embiid needed 38 points to take the lead in the race against LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo for the scoring title.
It was this defense that held LA to Philly’s only 22 points in the second quarter. With LeBron and Davis on the bench, Russell Westbrook will be the one to lead the Lakers, but he had a cold 3-11 start in the first half. Philadelphia would take a nine-point lead into the halftime break.

Monday’s game in Philadelphia quickly got out of hand as the Sixers were red-hot from deep and the Lakers couldn’t even get a bucket.
Things quickly got out of hand for the Lakers in the City of Brotherly Love as they fell 138-94. Their slow start and inability to convert three-point opportunities, coupled with the Sixers clicking on all cylinders, made it a foregone conclusion.
It’s a game Los Angeles would soon love to forget, whose only highlight is another milestone accomplishment for LeBron James. He is now the player in NBA history to play the most minutes in regular season and playoff games at 66,298, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
