Penn State wide receiver Koby Howard will miss an extended period due to an undisclosed injury, head coach Matt Campbell confirmed on Wednesday. Although the injury is a major setback for the Nittany Lions’ offense, Campbell did not rule Howard out for the remainder of the 2026 college football season.
Howard’s injury comes at an unfortunate time for Penn State, which is preparing to begin Big Ten conference play.
Koby Howard Injury Update
During his Wednesday press conference, Penn State head coach Matt Campbell revealed that Koby Howard would be sidelined for an “extended period of time.” However, the coach emphasized that the receiver is not necessarily out for the season.
Campbell did not disclose the nature of Howard’s injury or provide a specific return date. He indicated that further updates would be available as the wide receiver moves closer to full health.
“Obviously disappointing for Koby, but he’s handled it really well,” Campbell said, highlighting Howard’s response to the setback.
The injury reportedly occurred during Howard’s second touchdown play against Buffalo on September 19. Campbell previously described the receiver as having been “dinged up” during the game.
Koby Howard’s Impressive Start to the 2026 Season
Before suffering the injury, Howard had emerged as one of Penn State’s most productive offensive players. Through three games, he recorded 12 receptions for 344 receiving yards and three total touchdowns.
His early-season production made him an important target for quarterback Rocco Becht and a key part of Penn State’s passing attack.
Howard’s breakout performances have been particularly notable because he saw limited action during the previous season. As a freshman in 2025, he recorded seven receptions for 133 yards while playing under former head coach James Franklin and interim coach Terry Smith.
The 2026 season had represented a significant opportunity for Howard to establish himself as a major contributor to the Nittany Lions.
How Will Penn State Replace Koby Howard?
With Howard expected to miss extended time, Penn State’s coaching staff will need other playmakers to take on larger roles in the offense.
Offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser could rely more heavily on receivers Chase Sowell and Brett Eskildsen, along with tight end Benjamin Brahmer. All three players joined Campbell in moving from Iowa State to Penn State during the offseason.
The Nittany Lions will look to maintain their offensive momentum while Howard works toward recovery. His absence could lead to increased opportunities for younger receivers and other members of the passing-game unit.
Penn State’s Big Ten Schedule
Howard’s injury arrives just as Penn State begins a challenging stretch of its schedule. The Nittany Lions are set to open Big Ten play against Wisconsin at Beaver Stadium on Saturday, September 26.
The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. ET kickoff and will be broadcast on Peacock.
Penn State will then travel to Northwestern before facing ranked opponents USC and Michigan. Those games could become important matchups during the team’s pursuit of a successful conference campaign and a potential College Football Playoff appearance.
What’s Next for Koby Howard?
For now, Penn State has not announced a specific timetable for Howard’s return. The team has confirmed that he will miss extended time, but his season remains open.
Howard’s recovery will be closely monitored as the Nittany Lions adjust their offense. Given his strong start to the season, his eventual return could provide a significant boost to Penn State’s receiving corps.
Until further medical updates are released, the focus will remain on Howard’s health and rehabilitation rather than a projected comeback date.
