Australia’s Kaylee McKeown was able to set a much faster pace for her rivals by setting an Olympic record of 2:03.73 in the women’s 200 m backstroke final in front of 15,000 spectators at the Paris La Defense Arena on Friday, August 2.

The new Olympic record holder was in third place at the end of the first length, but managed to overcome two separate challenges from Team USA’s Regan Smith and Canada’s Kylie Masse to claim the gold medal in sensational fashion.

“I probably ran my race too hard,” McCain admitted. “I was a little nervous going out tonight. I’m not one of those people who gets too nervous, probably more anxious than anything, so I toughed it out and held on for dear life.

The race started at a fast pace, with McKeon, Smith and Massey all leading towards the first turn. Massey reached the wall first, followed by Smith and McKeown. The trio maintained their high pace as they headed towards the second turn.

Coach

History was made in the pools of Paris on Saturday morning AEST.

For most of the 20,000 or so people who formed the wall of noise (Emmanuel Macron included), this sentence refers to Léon Marchand.

For the (very few) Australians present at La Defense Arena, this is a direct reference to Kylie McCann.

That’s because when the hometown poster boy wins his fourth individual gold medal in these Olympics alone, history comes your way.

And it makes sense that things would be less noisy for a backstroker who wins a race of rare significance some 15,000 kilometers away from home.

But McKeon has never been a headline generator like Ariane Titmuss and Molly O’Callaghan in Paris, and she isn’t often talked about in the way Emma McKeon was in Tokyo three years ago.

Boyfriend

The 4-time Olympic medalist and her 24-year-old boyfriend are both athletes. Smith also made his Olympic debut with his girlfriend at the Tokyo Olympics and his 400m medley bronze was Australia’s first medal at the 2020 Olympics.

Kylie McKeown and Brendan Smith began dating in 2021, shortly before Smith joined the Griffith University Swim Club. We don’t know whether their relationship had any influence on Brendan Smith choosing Griffith. However, we do know that Michael Bohl has coached some of Australia’s most successful swimmers.

Personal life

In August 2020, McCain’s father Sholto died after a two-year battle with brain cancer. In his memory, she has a tattoo on her leg that reads, “I will always be with you”.

McCann has been dating fellow Australian national team member and 2020 Olympian Brendan Smith since November 2021.
