Twenty-five skaters will vie for the gold medal in the women’s free skate Thursday morning, with Kamila Valieva, the Russian Olympic Committee’s controversial 15-year-old star, the favorite to win.
Figure skating involves ample parts of creative interpretation and choreography along with athleticism, elevating the choice of music to which each skater competes.
The soundtrack to this competition will feature works from, among others, Rimsky-Korsakov, Puccini and Rachmaninoff. There will be lots of violins and, of course, “Bolero,” frequently chosen by skaters and the pick by Valieva.

Kamila has been named the 2022 European champion along with 2021 Rostelecom Cup champion, 2021 Skate Canada International champion, 2022 Russian national champion, and also, she has been named as the 2021 Russian National silver medalist.
She also won a gold medal in the 2022 Olympic champion in the team event and is a favorite for the gold in the women’s singles, but the investigation for her doping case is still pending.
Valieva at the junior level was the 2020 World Junior champion along with the 2019–20 Junior Grand Prix Final champion, and the 2020 Russian junior national champion.
