Justin Fields: Mri| Why didn't play| Did get benched

Bears quarterback Justin Fields injured his right hand during Sunday’s loss to the Vikings and will wait until at least Monday to determine the severity of the injury.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said in the post-game press conference that an X-ray taken on Fields’ hand was negative. Fields will undergo an MRI on Monday for further evaluation.

Fields left the game after going 6-10 for 58 yards and an interception. He ran eight times for 46 yards and was sacked four times.

Rookie Tyson Baigent was 10 of 14 for 83 yards and an interception. Baigent also ran for a touchdown, but could not keep the Bears from getting on the wrong side of the final score of 19–13.

Why didn’t play

Fields was ruled out of the Las Vegas Raiders game with a dislocated right thumb after missing practice this week. The Bears waited until the end of the week to make a designation on the quarterback, and they are happy with the progress he has made and do not plan to place him on injured reserve.

Did get benched

King may be aware of the Bears’ mentality toward Fields during offseason talks with the Bears earlier this year, but is Chicago really in a position to put him on the bench outright?

The Bears only have one veteran quarterback option, Nathan Peterman, on their 53-man roster, and based on Peterman’s past performances there is no reason to believe that bumping him into the starter will improve the offensive product. Over 13 career games, he has completed only 53.1% of his passes (85 of 160) for four touchdowns and 13 interceptions and has also struggled to maintain the No. 2 backup job. This is a downgrade from Fields, even though he shows little sign of improvement.

Then, there’s Tyson Baigent, an undrafted rookie from Division II Shepherd who worked his way onto the Bears’ 53-man roster in August. Bagant looked ahead of his years during his 2023 preseason performance for the Bears, completing 20 of his 29 passes for 156 yards and one interception and scoring two touchdowns with his legs, but did not play well at that level against starters during the NFL regular season. It is very difficult to play till Season.
