Jessica Briones burst into tears as she described in a courtroom the day her 4-year-old daughter, Olivia Briones, died.

“She was in my care, and I had to take care of her,” Briones said as she testified Thursday during her murder trial.

Olivia died on September 6, 2017, from severe brain swelling, bleeding from multiple parts of her head, a broken vertebra and other injuries that medical experts testified on Friday were inconsistent with the mother’s account. Briones was her only caregiver.

The closing arguments in the trial are scheduled to begin on Monday morning.

The day before Olivia’s death, Briones had taken her unconscious daughter to the San Antonio Police Department’s Pru substation because Olivia did not wake up in bed after vomiting. Express-News reported that Olivia was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead and disconnected from life support.

“For five years, I have repeatedly thought about what I did wrong and what I could have done differently,” Briones said. “I’ve put aside what I’ve done.”
