It’s hard to believe, but if you look back 15 years ago, the University of Kansas Jayhawks once had a chance to play for the Football National Championship.

Now if you know anything about college football, Kansas is strictly a basketball school, and has basically been bottom feeders in football for the program’s entire existence.

However, back in 2007, he was at the top of the world behind head coach Mark Mangino, leading 12–1, and ranked seventh in the country.

They would have played for a national championship if it weren’t for their lone loss to Missouri in the Big 12 Championship.

During the Vikings broadcast on Sunday, it was reported that Adrian Peterson was ill from swallowing his chewing tobacco. Peterson denied the story, saying that the thing that really made him sick was some strange seafood.

“I’ve been taking the plunge for the last 10 years,” Pietersen told the media after the game. “Swallowing dip? My body is immune to it. It doesn’t affect me at all.”

Wait…wait…what? Adrian Peterson has been using dip for a decade? This got me wondering: How much are dips used in the NFL?

Answer: A helluva lot. A whole helluva lot.

It turns out that dips aren’t just a baseball thing. It’s also about football. Since baseball has moved away from the dip—slowly—football players can now use it more, if not more, than their baseball counterparts.

I asked four active players and one recently retired player what percentage of NFL players are short. The lowest estimate was 40 percent. The highest was 60 percent. (In MLB, the numbers run much lower than that.)

All the players I spoke to were there to describe the sinking of the NFL. Almost the entire offensive line on almost every team uses the dip, the players said. Many are running behind. Most defensive line and many linebackers.

Teams’ equipment managers often make dip runs for players. They bring back bags full of dip and hand them to the players.

One player, who is white, said that the use of the dip varies across racial lines and positions. “It’s mostly racial,” said the player. “White people take the dip, only some black people. It’s also status wise: OL, DL, LB, FB Biggest Dipper.”
