The 13th Annual Fighters Only World MMA Awards goes down inside Verre Studios on Friday, December 11, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. And based on the photos we saw, a ton of mixed martial arts (MMA) royalty were in attendance in costume of nine.

Some interesting choices won in two categories – Herb Dean took “Best Referee” and Daniel Cormier took home “Best Media Personality” (“That’s for Dominic Cruz’s ass!”). And there were some older credibles, like Ariel Helwani taking “journalist of the year” like the tenth, and Dana White taking “leading man of the year,” nonetheless, whatever.
But, our highlight of the event is Chail Sonnen, who not only hosted the entire damn show, he performed a traditional awards show opening comedy monologue. And as you’d expect, he used his five minutes to roast everyone from Dylan Dennis to Colby Covington to Dana White.
Jones bounced back from his defeat by toiling Brandon Vera and then Vladimir Matyushenko before receiving his first big-name opponent in the form of Ryan Bader at UFC 126. Jones won the fight in the second round by guillotine choke submission. A month later, John fought Mauricio Shogun Rua for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Jones dominated the shogun throughout the fight, earning a TKO in the third round after hitting a flying knee to become the youngest UFC champion in company history.
Jones was to fight Rashad Evans at UFC 133, but the match was called off due to a hand injury to John. Instead Joan made her first title defense at UFC 135 against Quinton Jackson, where she submitted to the challenger via a rear-neck choke in the fourth round.
Jones continued to dominate the light heavyweight division and defeated Lyto Machida, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, Chel Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira and Daniel Cormier to snatch the title and was out of competition for a year.
Jones returned to UFC 197, where he fought Ovins Siant Prix for the interim UFC Light Heavyweight Championship after Daniel Cormier was ruled out of the fight with a leg injury.
Jones’ rematch against Cormier was scheduled for UFC 200, but the fight was canceled after USADA pulled Jones for a possible doping violation and Jones received a 1-year suspension from the commission and stripped of the interim title. In December, the Nevada State Athletic Commission also suspended John for a year.

Jones then faced future ONE Heavyweight Champion Brandon Vera. He completely destroyed Vera, breaking her face in three places. His next fight was against Vladimir Matyushenko. Matyushenko had a wrestling style and was a veteran of the game with the former IFL LHW champion. However, it took less than two minutes for Jones to stop the Russian with his vicious elbow.
He was then paired with TUF 8 winner Ryan Bader. Bader was undefeated and Bellator would become a future double champion. However, Jones broke his record by strangling Bader in the second round. This and an injury to number one title contender Rashad Evans made Jones a title challenger. The champion was PRIDE veteran Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
The fight took place just two months later. Jones was able to quickly neutralize the Shogun by kneeling. He then went on to dominate the champion and eventually TKO’d him in the third round. This made Jones the youngest world champion in UFC history at just 23 years old. Despite troubles with his injured arm, Jones would defend his first title that same year. He was to face the elder Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
Despite the size, strength, and weight advantages for Jackson, Jones was able to use his superb MMA knowledge to win. In doing so, he became the first and only UFC fighter to submit to Jackson. He then defended his belt against the dangerous Lyoto Machida. Machida put up a great fight but Jones was able to put her to sleep. In the process, Jones became the first fighter to submit to the karate legend.
