Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell announced Tuesday that McCarthy will undergo knee surgery after suffering a torn meniscus. McCarthy is out indefinitely, although the general timeframe will depend on the type of surgery he had:
Speaking to reporters on McCarthy’s meniscus injury, O’Connell said, “We don’t know the severity yet,” and added that a timeline for his recovery would not be determined until he has surgery. .
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported McCarthy complained of knee pain over the weekend before undergoing an MRI Monday night. The 21-year-old was held out of Monday’s practice as a precaution before further evaluation revealed a more serious problem.
Tuesday’s news is particularly disappointing because it halts the momentum McCarthy was building after his encouraging preseason debut against the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday. “It’s completely a medical decision,” O’Connell said of the surgery. “Surely, what’s best for J.J.’s long-term health?” McCarthy will be the priority. I don’t have that answer and I really wouldn’t be a part of determining that answer.
The No. 10 overall pick, who suffered the injury during his preseason debut on Saturday and reported knee soreness to the training staff on Monday, will be out for a few weeks if the meniscus requires a trim, But the ongoing repairs could potentially keep him out of the entire season.
Regardless of the outcome of the surgery, McCarthy being sidelined apparently means ex-Jet Darnold will be the Vikings starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Giants in East Rutherford.
