College

The rookie shortstop for the Houston Astros has been called many things like a clutch, but his college head coach says Jeremy Pea is something else: Pisces.

“Jeremy Pea is a very mean player on the baseball field,” said University of Maine head coach Nick Durba.

Derba remembers Pea as a raw prospect, the son of a former big leaguer from Providence, Rhode Island.

“I think he just wanted to go somewhere where he was going to play, and he would be taken care of, and we weren’t too far from home,” Derba said.

The most Homers Pena hits in the college season were six.

“He came back a bit aggressively, but still a good offensive player,” Derba said. “But you know, you know, he had some special talent from day one.”

High School

When Pea showed up to a baseball tryout at Providence Classical High School as a freshman, head coach Ken Vanuk didn’t hold back. Wnuk always liked to put infielders to the test immediately, giving tough competition to on-field players and reacting to bad bounces on particularly poor baseball fields in the Northeast. Pena handled them with ease.

“I don’t pussyfoot with ground balls,” Vanuk said. “But he made all the plays, all the throws and I’m just thinking, ‘This kid is cool.'”

When University of Maine head coach Nick Durba first saw Pea as a high school sophomore, he saw a fluidity in the hands of the shortstop, whose footwork and instinct exceeded his expectations for a 16-year-old.

“He was a double-A shortstop as a sophomore in high school,” Derba said. “I saw him take a ground ball and I thought he was the best defender in the country.”

The Pea family’s affinity for baseball, however, did not begin with three young boys finding creative ways to play the sport they loved.

Vasiliqi Turlla spent most of his academic career participating in sports. She participated in the track and field team at Bangor High School before graduating in 2016.
