He joined the Red Sox in 2002, after the ownership of John W. Henry, Tom Werner, and Larry Lucchino took over the team from John Harrington. He worked as assistant to the general manager until December 2005. He then was given the title of assistant general manager. Hoyer briefly served as co-general manager of the Red Sox from December 12, 2005, to January 19, 2006, and then returning to his previous job of assistant general manager.

The Chicago Cubs signed Jed Hoyer to a five-year deal that will officially keep him on as president of baseball operations through 2025 following Theo Epstein’s departure.

Last week, the Cubs announced that Epstein would step down and be replaced by Hoyer, who was the team’s general manager.

Epstein joined the Cubs in 2011 after helping the Red Sox win two World Series as the youngest general manager in MLB history, taking the job at only 28. He then worked his championship magic in Chicago, with the Cubs winning the World Series in 2016, ending the franchise’s 108-year championship drought.

“We plan to be really active in free agency,” team president Jed Hoyer said Friday afternoon. “We plan to spend money intelligently. We’re scouting that market heavily. We’re going to analyze that market heavily. There’s offseasons when free agency is something you do a little bit of, and obviously we have to be a little more active than usual to fill out our roster, because we have a lot more open spots.”
