ALASKA (KTUU) β€” Brent Sass said he and his Iditarod dog are loving the cool conditions along the Yukon River as they checked in and headed out to Ruby Checkpoint this morning. As the first musher for Ruby, Sass wins a delicious chef-prepared meal, but decides to check the rain.

“Gee, I wish I could stay, but the schedule doesn’t allow it,” the mother-in-law told the checkers at the checkpoint. “It’s cold, I have to take advantage of it. It’s beautiful.”

Checkers told Sass that the temperature was right about zero degrees. He grabbed his drop bag and some heat to refuel his stove and was on his way back.

Chasing five-time race champion Dallas Seaway said some of his dogs were not feeling well, but recovered during their 24-hour layover and were doing much better Friday morning. He told an Alaska news source that he saw a new energy in his team on Friday.
