The New Orleans Saints drafted former Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book in the 2021 NFL Draft with the 133rd overall pick, coming in the fourth round. He joins a quarterback room that includes Tessam Hill, Jameis Winston and Trevor Simien and — for the first time in 15 years — doesn’t include Drew Brees.

There has been a lot of discussion in the Big Easy about who will start the center under season for the Saints. You have the prototype pocket passer in the rugged utility guy in Vinton vs. Hill. The simian – barring injury or other unforeseen circumstances – is likely to be the best backup.

What about Ian Book?

Players taken in the fourth round of the draft are rarely considered “reached”. When you draft players in rounds 1-3, you expect them to start within a season or two. Guys, you’re the kind of player you’d expect in rounds 6-7, but the players that you’ve been drawn into rounds 4 and 5 are prospects that you think have the potential to make a positive impact on the franchise.

The Oak Ridge High School alumnus and current QB for the New Orleans Saints will make his debut against the Miami Dolphins tonight.

EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – Notre Dame alumnus and New Orleans Saints quarterback Ian Book will make his debut in Monday Night football against the Miami Dolphins.

To say that the year of the saints has been difficult would be an understatement. It all started during the off-season when Drew Brees announced his retirement, and there was no replacement in place.

As the Saints got closer and closer to the regular season, they received more bad news. First, his star wide receiver Michael Thomas had surgery for what he initially believed to be half a season.

Their starting QB, last year’s backup, Jameis Winston, was injured and ruled out for the rest of the season. The top two QBs on the depth chart, Tessom Hill and Trevor Simien, were ruled out of tonight’s game for being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

This leaves rookie QB Ian Book to make his debut as a starting QB in a game that has a playoff effect.

Who is

Maybe Ian Book’s landing with the Saints is a sign from above: The rookie quarterback was a four-year starter at the University of Notre Dame before he was selected by New Orleans in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Book was a three-year starter for Fighting Irish, spending five years with the school overall, redshirting as a freshman. In total, he played 45 games, throwing 8,948 yards, 72 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

Despite his modest success in college, Book’s fourth-round selection was somewhat of a surprise: scouts and analysts alike thought Book would be a late selection, so going into fourth raised some eyebrows—particularly for such a team. For what seemed like the QB position was ascertained before 2021.

A rookie isn’t exactly a quarterback physically gifted to play in the NFL. He doesn’t have the strongest hands, has trouble processing territory and isn’t the most accurate passer-by. He does have a bit of mobility, however, and should play well within the similar role of Tessom Hill in Sean Payton’s offense.
