Famous American big mountain skier Hilary Nelson’s body was found Wednesday morning after she fell down a narrow 5,000 feet slope during a trek in the Himalayas two days ago.
Nelson and his partner Jim Morrison scaled the 26,781 ft peak of Manaslu on Monday morning. They reached the summit at 10.42 a.m. “under difficult circumstances,” Morrison wrote in an Instagram post on Wednesday. The pair transitioned from climbing to skiing to regroup with their Sherpa team.
Rescue
American skier Hilary Nelson went missing in Manaslu during a ski descent from True Summit earlier this week. This morning, a helicopter search and rescue team traced Nelson’s body to the south.
Cimmeric Air’s Captain Surendra Poudel told The Washington Post that “rescuers found his body about 6,200 feet (1,900 m) from the summit.” Morrison and two others were dropped by a helicopter about 50 meters away from where Nelson was found. It took more than an hour to get Nelson out of the snow; After that he was taken to Kathmandu.
“On September 26th at 10:42 am, we reached the true summit of Manaslu in tough conditions,” Morrison said on Instagram. “We quickly transitioned from climbing into cold and windy skiing and planned to ski around the corner and regroup with our Sherpa team. I skied first, and after a few turns, Hilary followed and began a small avalanche. She got swept off her feet and headed south (opposite the climb route) down a narrow snow slope… I did everything I could to find her but face Was unable to go down because I expected to find him alive and live my life with him.”
Death

She was swept off her feet and carried down a narrow snowy slope on the south side of the mountain (opposite the ascent) of more than 5000 mountains.’
He also said, ‘I tried everything I could to find him, but was unable to go face down because I was hoping to find him alive and live my life with him.’
‘I found his body… at 10:30 this morning. I am in Kathmandu with him and his soul. My loss is indescribable and I am focused on her children and their footsteps,’ Morrison said.
Cause of death
Nelson, 49, went missing on Monday along with his partner while descending the world’s eighth highest peak.
On Wednesday, rescuers discovered his body on the south side of the 8,163 m (26,781 ft) summit. According to previous reports, she had fallen into a crack in a glacier.
Nelson was widely regarded as one of the most accomplished climbers of his generation.
He and his partner Jim Morrison were the first to ski the world’s fourth highest peak, Mount Lhotse in Nepal, in 2018.
