(CNN) The hottest Senate contest in Georgia is too early to call nearly six hours after most voting in the state closed, with Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschelle Walker locked in a tight race that could decide control of the US Senate .
If none of the candidates exceeds the 50% threshold, Warnock and Walker will proceed to the December 6th run-off. Based on the results of Senate races in Pennsylvania, Arizona and Nevada, voters in Georgia — for the second consecutive election cycle — may have a Senate majority in their hands.
The race is so close it underscores the prevalence of ticket-splitting in Georgia this year. Republican Gov. Brian Kemp comfortably defeated Democrat Stacey Abrams, CNN estimated, but Walker trailed Kemp’s margin all night, while Warnock trailed Abrams.
In brief remarks on Tuesday night, Walker asked supporters gathered in the hotel ballroom to “stay a little longer.”
“I’m telling you now – I didn’t come to give up,” said Walker.
Warnock has yet to address the crowd at his election night headquarters. But on Monday night, he joked to CNN about a potential run-off campaign.
“I think there is a bipartisan agreement that we (rather) will not mix politics and Thanksgiving together,” Warnock said.
