Coaching record

Greg Popovich became the all-time winning head coach in the NBA with 1,336 wins.

Popovich surpassed Don Nelson, who previously held the record for regular season wins, with the San Antonio Spurs’ 104-102 victory over the Utah Jazz on Friday night.

“It’s just a testament to a lot of people,” Popovich said. “It’s not something that belongs to one person. Basketball is a team sport. You preach to your players that they have to do it together and that’s certainly happened to all the wonderful players and coaches in my life, the staff.” That I’ve got the support of this wonderful city.

1996

Five rings and 25 years later, Greg Popovich is a coaching legend revered for championing young stars (even the 57th overall draft pick) and adding barrier-breaking forces like Becky Hyman to his ranks . But at this point in 1996, he was compared to a “small, carnivorous mammal” when he replaced former Spurs coach Bob Hill to lead a 3-15 team.

“Most Stupid Smart Man”

Hill told Express-News writers that he had survived the firing. He was under the impression that the Spurs front office was working on a contract extension when Pop, who was then the team’s vice president, called him into his office on the morning of December 10, 1996, and promptly fired him. Former Express-News player Kevin O’Keefe described the 20-second meeting as “the sad end of a relationship.” Just a few months earlier, Hill had taken the Spurs to the playoffs.
