The Cleveland Guardians delivered a dominant performance against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night, cruising to an 8-1 victory at Progressive Field. The headline belonged to right fielder Jo Adell, who produced a career-best six RBIs while helping Cleveland take control early.
Adell wasted little time making an impact in the Giants vs. Guardians matchup. Three batters into the game, he launched a 455-foot home run, the longest homer hit by Cleveland this season, to give the Guardians an immediate 3-0 advantage.
He continued to punish San Francisco pitching throughout the opening innings. Adell followed his home run with a two-run single in the second inning and added another RBI single in the fourth, reaching six RBIs before the game had even reached its halfway point.
The performance marked a career high in RBIs for Adell and gave the Guardians all the offensive momentum they needed.
Jo Adell Leads Cleveland’s Offensive Surge
Adell’s six-RBI performance was the defining moment of the game. His early power display put Cleveland in front, while his run-producing singles kept the pressure on the Giants.
The Guardians continued adding to their lead after Adell’s second-inning contribution. San Francisco struggled to contain Cleveland’s lineup, and defensive mistakes also helped extend the damage.
Adell eventually left the game after seven innings after fouling a pitch off his knee earlier in the contest. Despite the discomfort, he had already done more than enough to put Cleveland in a commanding position.
The Guardians’ offensive attack was particularly effective against Giants starter Carson Whisenhunt, who struggled to generate swings and misses.
Carson Whisenhunt Struggles Against Guardians
Whisenhunt endured a difficult outing, allowing nine hits and seven runs over four innings. He walked two batters and recorded only one strikeout.
Cleveland hitters repeatedly made contact, with the Guardians generating only five swings and misses against Whisenhunt’s 80 pitches. Six of the seven runs charged to him were earned, with the other run coming after a defensive error.
The Giants were unable to recover from the early deficit, leaving their pitching staff under pressure for most of the night.
Giants Get Only One Run
San Francisco’s lone run came from rookie Bryce Eldridge, who connected for his 14th home run of the season in the second inning.
Eldridge also made an impressive defensive play during the game when he tagged former Giants catcher Patrick Bailey, who was facing his former club for the first time since being traded to Cleveland.
The Giants created another opportunity in the fourth inning after loading the bases with one out. However, Andrew Knizner grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, ending what became San Francisco’s best scoring opportunity of the night.
After that threat disappeared, the Giants managed only two hits over the final five innings.
Patrick Bailey Faces Former Team
The game carried additional significance because of Bailey’s first matchup against San Francisco since the Giants traded him to Cleveland in May.
Bailey spent the first part of his Major League career with the Giants after being selected 13th overall in the 2020 MLB Draft. He made his San Francisco debut in 2023 and became known as one of the team’s strongest defensive players.
The Giants traded Bailey to the Guardians for left-handed pitching prospect Matt Wilkinson and the 29th overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.
Bailey said before the game that he was looking forward to seeing familiar faces and reflecting on his time in San Francisco. He also helped guide Cleveland starter Foster Griffin through six innings of one-run baseball.
Griffin delivered an excellent performance, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings. The strong start helped Cleveland maintain its early advantage.
Bryce Eldridge Provides a Bright Spot
Although San Francisco struggled offensively as a team, Eldridge remained one of the positives.
His second-inning homer gave the Giants their only run, and he collected two hits against Griffin. The rookie has now reached 14 home runs this season, giving San Francisco an encouraging young power threat.
Turner Hill also recorded his first Major League double later in the game, giving the Giants another small highlight during an otherwise disappointing night.
Guardians Continue Wild Card Push
The victory improved Cleveland’s record to 61-65 and kept the Guardians involved in the American League Wild Card race.
For San Francisco, the loss dropped the Giants to 51-74 and highlighted continuing problems on the pitching side. Cleveland’s lineup was able to make consistent contact, while San Francisco struggled to create enough offense to answer the early deficit.
The Giants will have another opportunity in the series, with Matt Wilkinson expected to make his Major League debut against his former organization. Wilkinson was acquired by Cleveland as part of the Bailey trade, making his potential debut another full-circle moment in the matchup.
Giants vs Guardians Series Has Added Drama
The Giants vs. Guardians series has become more interesting because of the players connected to the May trade. Bailey is now wearing Cleveland’s uniform against his former team, while Wilkinson is preparing to potentially make his first MLB appearance against the organization that drafted and developed him.
Tuesday’s game, however, belonged entirely to Cleveland.
Adell’s six RBIs, Griffin’s strong pitching and Cleveland’s relentless offensive pressure combined to produce an emphatic 8-1 victory. San Francisco will need a much stronger performance at the plate and on the mound to turn the series around.
For the Guardians, the win provided another important boost as they continue their pursuit of the American League postseason picture.
