Hours before news broke that the Dodgers had signed Freddie Freeman to a six-year, $162 million contract, Andrew Freedman was asked about his interest in a first baseman on MLB Network. The LA president of baseball operations had a simple answer: “He’s a really, really, really good baseball player.” But then he broke into a big grin. He got up as if he was standing on his feet. If he had communicated one thing verbally with his safe, straight one-liners, he had communicated another visually: Friedman just couldn’t hold back that he really, really, seriously adored Freeman. was interested in.

And who can blame him? If you were presiding over a team that was already projected to be the best in baseball, and you were closing in on a long-term deal with a star of this caliber, would you smile and say no to your Won’t get out of shoes like you tried to hesitate about it on national television?

Before the end of the night, Friedman had made the Dodgers a five-time All-Star. In doing so, he took the strongest team in baseball and made it even stronger.

Now how to best describe this awesome club? Its updated lineup reads like something out of a video game – a collection of talent that pushes right against the limits of reality. The Dodgers now have a 2020 MVP (Freeman), 2019 MVP (Cody Bellinger) and 2018 MVP (Mookie Bates). His estimated winning total from the Baseball Prospectus has been revised to 102.8. The Dodgers didn’t really need Freeman, as they didn’t have a specific hole on their roster to fill, or the general need to upgrade their lineup. But they certainly had a reason to want him: Freeman was the most consistent player available in free agency, and his presence would have made any team instantly better, no matter how good they were at the start.

On Wednesday night, Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr made the news after going on Instagram Live with Yansen Pujols and talking about losing Freddie Freeman. Acuna said he wouldn’t miss Freeman this year because the two “carried out.”

Later in the night, Akuna tweeted that he didn’t say what people thought he was saying.

On Thursday, Akuna clarified what he meant by taking his words out of context.

“I think the journalists exaggerated,” he said through a translator. “I didn’t say anything bad about Freeman. I talked about what happened in 2018 when I came in as a rookie, the rest was thrown out of proportion.”

He referred to the 2018 incident when he claimed that the veterans of the brave tried to “keep him under control” by wiping black eyeballs from his face. Asked whether he and Freeman had a good relationship, Acuna said that’s actually not partly because of the incident.

“I would say we didn’t because of what happened, but that is in the past,” he said.

Despite admitting that his words were taken out of context, Acuna does not regret anything he said on Wednesday.
