The world is well aware of Frances Tiafoe. Currently ranked 52nd, the 21-year-old won his first ATP title last February at Delray Beach. He has rocked American tennis with his meteoric rise, and many eyes will be on him at next week’s US Open.

But Francis has a twin brother, Franklin, who is trying to make his place as well.

“I want to be known as Franklin Tiafoe, not as Frances’ brother,” he told Baseline. Franklin has played a handful of ITF professional tournaments so far. (Photo courtesy of Franklin Tiafo)

His father, Frances Tiafoe Sr., comes from a wealthy family, and was a successful politician, and his mother, Alfina Camara, comes from a large, modest family. Francis Tiafoe was born on 20 January 1998 to his twin brother Franklin, in Maryland to Constant (better known as Francis Sr.) Tiafo and Alfina Kamara, immigrants from Sierra Leone. His father immigrated to the United States in 1993, while his mother joined him in 1996 to survive the civil war in his country. In 1999, his father began working as a daily wage worker on a construction team that built the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Maryland. When the facility was completed, he was hired as an on-site custodian and given an additional office to reside at the center. Francis and Franklin stayed at the center with their father five days a week for the next 11 years. He took advantage of his living conditions to start playing tennis regularly at the age of 4. When she was not working the night shift as a nurse, she stayed with her mother.
