Fernando Valenzuela Anguamea (Latin American Spanish pronunciation: [feɾˈnando βalenˈswela]; November 1, 1960 – October 22, 2024) was a baseball pitcher from Mexico. Valenzuela spent a total of seventeen seasons active in Major League Baseball (MLB) from the years 1980 to 1991, and later from 1993 to 1997. Even though he played for six teams in Total, he spent most of his time with Los Angeles Dodgers. Valenzuela was a left-handed batter and thrower.

The native of etchohauquila, Sonora in Mexico, a few weeks before his Team Dodgers’ shot at the World Series moved from the team’s coverage to concentrate on his health. He had earlier declared that the 2025 season was when he would make a comeback.

“Fernandomania” is a phenomenon that has taken Most Los Angeles by storm. His 1981 world series with the Boys in Blue was the culmination of a 17 year career which included eleven seasons with the Boys in Blue.

Valenzuela has not provided a consise explanation as he resigned from his role as the team’s radio broadcaster in September, 2021. Although some sources claim that he suffered from cancer, the club has yet to reveal the specifics of his death.

Sonora, Mexico is where Fernando Valenzuela was born. He initiated his professional journey back home, in the Mexican League. In 1979 he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers where he made his Major League Baseball debut in 1981.

He was voted the NL Rookie of the Year and the NL Cy Young during the same season, also contributing towards winning the World Series title for the teams, and captured the public’s heart instantly. This resulted in the emergence of “Fernandomania” which attracted a large number of supporters of the Latino community all over the country.
