The Emoni Bates have been officially relocated to Eastern Michigan.

The school announced Tuesday that the 6-foot-9 guard would play for his hometown Eagles this season, nearly two months after Bates shared his plans on social media.

“I love my city and it was a big deal for me to come home to do something special,” Bates said. “I have known many people on the team to play and compete together. It was important for me to have a strong relationship and bond with my teammates and the coaching staff.”

He averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game last season as a freshman at Memphis, where he enrolled after skipping a year of high school and reclassifying to join the Class of 2021.

Bates became the first sophomore to win the Gatorade National Player of the Year Award in high school basketball in 2020, beating Cade Cunningham and Evan Mobley. Detroit drafted Cunningham No. 1 overall last year, before Cleveland named Mobley two places in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Bates committed to playing for Tom Izzo at Michigan State two years ago, later de-committed and signed with Memphis. Bates played 18 games for the Tigers, ending 22–11 under Penny Hardaway. Bates missed most of the season with a back injury before attending two NCAA Tournament games in Memphis.

Bates announced in April that he was leaving school and later said he would decide between Michigan, Arkansas, Seton Hall, DePaul, Louisville and Eastern Michigan.

Why did transfer

The opportunity to be a hometown hero isn’t the only reason Bates is relocating to eastern Michigan. In the same May 2 interview with On3, Bates said that he values a positive relationship with his coaches and teammates and, more than anything, he wants to win.

“I look forward to a bond with my coaches, teammates and staff,” Bates told On3. “Having a mindset of being positive and getting better every day. Just help my teammates to be better and just build each other up. And I really want to win. That is the main goal. That’s where I’m going to go next.”

However, the Eagles aren’t exactly a powerhouse. They are coming off a 10–21 season in 2021–22 under first-year coach Stan Heath, and have not had a 22–13 winning season since 2017-18.

Neither Heath nor the Eagles’ previous three coaches have led the team to an NCAA Tournament berth. The team last made the tournament in 1998, the last time the Eagles were winners of the Mack tournament.

Mom

Emonie’s mom, Edith, calms her down during the phone convo… and then hands the phone over to a man who appears to have a gun.

It looks like the man asks if the police got “my stick in your car?” … to which Bates replied, “Yes.”

Bates was hit with two felony counts — carrying a concealed weapon and altering the ID mark on a firearm — but on Thursday, Bates’ attorney, Steve Haney, told ESPN he expected to agree to a plea deal. After that the charges will be dismissed.

Haney says he will request a misdemeanor count of attempted illegal transport of a weapon … which will be dismissed from his record if he completes a diversion program.

The school confirmed the news to TMZ Sports… saying, “The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics has received information that there is a settlement between the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office and Emonie Bates’ defense team, resulting in felony charges. will be rejected.”

“In accordance with EMU athletics policies, Mr. Bates is immediately reinstated in all athletic and campus activities.”

Age

Bates is a dangerous competitive shot-maker who is arguably the best scorer in high school basketball. He can score in a variety of ways because of his ability to put the ball in the basket at all three levels. He’s pulling dangerously deep into the transition and its range extends beyond NBA Three. Bates has a quick trigger and shoots smoothly at the defenders. Because of his length, quick release and touch, he doesn’t get astonished when he attempts to jump with a high degree of difficulty. He also has the instinct as a passer-by and sometimes makes the right find when a defense zeroes in on him. Defensively, there’s a lot of potential there. He can be versatile on that end because he has the size, length and fluidity to test multiple positions. Bates has multi-year All-Star type potential in the association. He displays the ability to be highly productive while dominating the high school basketball scene in the scoring category.

What happened to Emoni Bates?

Bates eventually went down with a mysterious back injury and headed home for Michigan. Memphis finally reached its potential without him.

Why did Emoni Bates transfer from Memphis?

Bates decided to move from the Tigers after an up and down season in which he scored 9.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 18 games. He took 38.6 percent of the shots from the field and 32.9 percent of the shots from the 3-point arc.
