Memphis freshman Emonie Bates returned to court for the Tigers on Thursday in an NCAA Tournament first-round game against Boise State, making his first appearance since Jan. 27.

Bates, who missed the Tigers’ last 12 matches due to a back injury, checked in at 5:57 in the first half. Coach Penny Hardaway said on Wednesday she was not sure Bates would play.

“He came on the trip like everyone else, but we just don’t know,” Hardaway said.

A five-star recruit in the 2021 class, Bates averaged 10.4 points and 3.6 rebounds in 16 regular-season games.

The Tigers were 11-8 at the time of Bates’ last appearance. Memphis closed out the season by winning 10 of their final 12 games, making their way to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 9 seed. This is Memphis’ first tournament since 2014.

What happened to

Teams on the street in college basketball are usually intent on speeding out of town after a game. There is an impatient commotion in and around the visiting locker room as preparations are made to leave as soon as possible.

With Memphis, not so much. This is just another way Penny Hardaway works differently.

Hardaway kept his team in the locker room for a long time on Tuesday night after beating Cincinnati 81-74. The muffled voices coming through the door were animated and happy, as you’d expect from a team that just won its sixth straight. The Tigers spent their time playing the game behind closed doors, then emerged for media engagements and greeted some of the family members who were in the stands.

While Hardaway was talking to her team and support staff waited outside, a program insider quietly voiced a season-long lingering question that was all over the map: “What do they do with Betts? “

Bates was admitted to the top five after reclassification in 2021.

Amonie Bates is missing. The 6’9″ wing player who made the cover of Sports Illustrated at age 15 was billed by SI—and everyone else—to become the global superstar after LeBron James and Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.” Next in line”, hasn’t played in three weeks and the Tigers are thriving without him.

This is a curious case of a suddenly disposable savior.

The last time Bates suited for Memphis was on January 27, when he played a stellar role in a win over East Carolina. It was the weather in the tank at that time. The Tigers were 11-8, falling out of the top 12 of the preseason. They were tepid underachievers, the biggest bust in college basketball, a useless jumble of misplaced talents. And the generational event of a freshman from Memphis was struggling like anyone.

He is 18 years old. Emonie Bates was born on February 22, 1986 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is an American college basketball player for the Memphis Tigers of the American Athletic Conference (AAC). He was unanimously a five-star recruit and one of the top players in the 2021 category. As a freshman at Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan, he led his team to a state championship. Bates became the first sophomore to win the Gatorade National Player of the Year Boys Award.

Injury

The No. 9 Memphis Tigers are taking on the No. 8 Boise State Broncos in the opening game of the 2022 NCAA Tournament and the start of the competition saw a big surprise from Memphis with Emonie Bates going through the pregame warmup. Head coach Penny Hardaway did not expect him to play much, but Bates eventually entered the game and wasted no time in showing why he is considered one of the top prospects in basketball.

Bates had been out since late January with a back injury, although there were some additional questions about Star’s recruiting throughout the season. If the Tigers can overtake Boise State in this opening game, with Betts coming back to full health, they will feel better about their chances of advancing to top overall seed Gonzaga Bulldogs. We’ll see how many runs Betts gets in this game, but it’s a good sign for Memphis and college basketball fans.
