New details are emerging regarding the sudden death of former NFL wide receiver Demerius Thomas Thursday night at his home in Georgia.

“Preliminary information is that he died of a medical problem, and our investigators currently have no reason to believe otherwise,” a police statement said early Friday.

After that, Latonya Bonsignur, a first cousin who grew up with Thomas and was so close that they considered themselves siblings, told the Associated Press that the family believed he died of a seizure.

Thomas spent 10 years in the NFL, nine of them with the Broncos, including a brief seven-game stint with the Texans and another season with the Jets. Thomas caught 724 passes in his career with 9,763 receiving yards and 63 touchdowns.

While with the Broncos, he won one Super Bowl playing alongside Peyton Manning and had four straight seasons with at least 1,300 receiving yards. Along with Manning and Thomas, the Broncos reached the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2013 season, before winning Super Bowl 50 against the Panthers two years later, losing to the Seahawks.

When Thomas was 11, police arrested his mother, Katina Smith, and grandmother, Minnie Pearl Thomas, on drug charges. Smith was sentenced to 20 years in prison and Minnie Pearl Thomas was sentenced to life. After Smith went to prison, Thomas lived with his uncle James Brown. According to the AP, Brown died on November 15 and Thomas attended his funeral.

President Barack Obama reduced the sentences of both women as part of an initiative to reduce the punishment of nonviolent drug offenders. Smith was freed on July 13, 2015, and Minnie Pearl Thomas was freed on August 2, 2016. Smith was able to watch Thomas win Super Bowl 50 in February 2016.

Is dead

Former Denver Broncos wide receiver, Super Bowl winner and one of the franchise’s most prolific pass catchers, Demarius Thomas, was found dead at his Georgia home Thursday night, police said.

He was 33 years old and was not suspected of foul play.

“I can confirm that Demerius Thomas was found dead at his home this evening,” Roswell police officer and department spokesman Tim Lupo said in a statement.

“Preliminary information is that he died of a medical problem, and our investigators currently have no reason to believe otherwise.”

Cousin Latonya Bonsignur said Thomas, found in a shower at their home, had been battling seizures recently.

“He had been suffering from seizures for over a year, and we believe he had a seizure while he was taking a shower,” Bonsignor said early Friday. “We’re not sure when he died. We just spoke to him yesterday.”
