The Packers have placed the franchise tag on All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams, keeping one of the league’s best players at Green Bay, according to multiple reports. It comes on the heels of quarterback Aaron Rodgers announcing he will be with the Packers.

The franchise tag figure for Adams for the 2022 season is $20.1 million. In late February, Packers GM Brian Gutkunst told reporters that he did not like to use the franchise tag and would prefer to give Adams a contract extension.

The Packers have been a 2014 second-round selection first-team All-Pro selection in the last two seasons and a Pro Bowler in the last five seasons.

Adams, 29, is coming off a single-season career high in receptions (123) and receiving yards (1,553) as well as 11 touchdowns. Adams led the league in 2020 with 18 TD catches. For his career, he took part in 669 receptions for 8,121 yards and 73 TDs.

Contract

In 2010, the Green Bay Packers used the franchise tag on defensive tackle Ryan Pickett. The Packers handed him the tag on February 24 of that year in hopes of coming to an agreement with him on a long-term contract. Exactly 16 days later, on March 12, Piquet signed a new four-year deal and refrained from playing on tag.

For the first time since that position 12 years ago, the Packers once again used the franchise tag. This time it’s up to wide receiver Davante Adams, whose previous contract is set to expire when the 2022 league year begins on March 16. Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel first reported the news.

As was the case with Pickett, the Packers are hoping to sign Adams to a long-term contract, something that seems more plausible now that Aaron Rodgers is reportedly planning to sign an extension of his own. If the two sides don’t come to an agreement before March 16, the Packers will be on the hook for a salary cap hit of just over $20 million, the tag amount for Adams.

Adams and Villarreal were college sweethearts
Villarreal was born in 1993 in Salinas, California to parents Gustavo Villarreal and Barbara Davis. Her father is of Mexican descent and her mother, a former fitness model, is Caucasian.

Villarreal graduated from Everett Alvarez High School before attending Fresno State, where she met Adams. The pair began dating for several years and she was with him on draft day when cameras cut off their family’s reaction.

In 2017, Adams proposed to Villarreal in the Bahamas. He surprised her by saying that they were going there for a photoshoot. She wrote on Instagram, “Thought we were just doing a casual photo shoot… Little did I know she had big plans.” “Davante thought of the most perfect, creative, heartfelt, tempting proposal.”
