New York Giants tight end Darren Waller on Tuesday opened up about his past struggles with drug addiction and a time when he overdosed on drugs in 2017.
Appearing on the Second Wind podcast (starting at the 17:40 mark of the video), Waller opened up about his 2017 overdose of sniffing pills while serving a one-year suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. talked to:
“I went to get out of the car and I felt like I was just about to fall to the ground, and I said, ‘This is going to cause a scene.’ It’s right around the corner from the Ravens facility. … I get back in the car and just thinking, ‘Okay, I’ll just come down from it and straighten up.’ But then it was like someone pulled the plug from behind the TV… I just put my head back and then woke up and it was night time because I had passed out during the day.
“I woke up in the night, and it felt like my whole body was sweating and I was freezing and I felt crazy. I don’t know what happened, but then you look back and see therapy and other Let’s process it through things, and it’s like, you OD’ed, you didn’t voluntarily take a nap for six hours there.”
