The former Louisville men’s basketball guard made an impossible game-winning shot to stun the Suns over the Mavericks.

Former Louisville men’s basketball standout Damian Lee played a little but gamble this off-season. After playing the last four years of his career alongside his brother-in-law, Steph Curry, with the Golden State Warriors, Lee bet on himself, eventually signing free agency with the Phoenix Suns.

Lee wasted no time making an impact for his new team, playing a key role in the Suns’ 107–105 opening season win over the Dallas Mavericks.

With game 105 and a tie in less than 20 seconds, Lee took a pass into the wing from Devin Booker, attempted to drive into the lane, but was wrapped around by Spencer Dinwiddie. Pinned on the right baseline by Dinwiddie, Lee took an unbalanced jumper, falling to the right of his defender, ending the forward shot with 9.7 seconds remaining.

College

In his freshman season as a member of the 2011–12 Drexel Dragons men’s basketball team, Lee debuted at point guard. During that season, he averaged 12 points and 4.4 rebounds. Following an impressive start to his college career, he was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Year. He was also named to the CAA All-Tournament Team after Drexel averaged more than 15 points in three tournament games. In the CAA championship game, the Dragons (25–5) lost to the VCU, 59–56. VCU was the Final Four team last year, and by most estimates both teams making up the NCAA Tournament. However, a disappointing selection Sunday saw the Dragons not be invited to the NCAA Tournament and instead accepted an automatic bid to the 2012 National Invitational Tournament as the CAA regular season champions and 3rd seed. The Dragons defeated UCF and Northern Iowa before falling to the UMass in the regional finals.

The following season, Lee was named to a second-team All-CAA lead by Drexel, scoring an average of 17.1 points per game and finishing third in the CAA. He was second in the CAA in free throw percentage (.829) and fourth in three pointers per game (2.3). In a game against Old Dominion, Lee recorded a career-high 34 points.

In his third season at Drexel, after being selected to the Precision CAA All-Conference First Team, Lee suffered a torn ACL in a game against Arizona. This caused him to sit out the entire season and reschedule his junior year.
