In running, you always want to do the best you can. Doing the best means having a good time by finishing quickly. To run fast, you must have certain abilities to do so. Here are some capabilities to keep in mind.

Physical Efficiency: You have to run 3.1 miles in a cross country meet. To do this you must be sufficiently trained which means that you are able to walk earlier and perhaps even longer distances. Without this training, your body is unable to handle such a long course.

Mental Ability: You may be asking yourself, “What does mental ability have to do with performance in a race?” Let’s say you are in the middle of a race and you are in the middle of a pack (ie a group of runners). About two miles into you you see a steep hill that is decently tall. If your mindset about the hill is “I’m not going to get up that easily,” you will slow down and probably fall behind the pack you were running with. Now if you think “I’m going to give this hill one more shot”, you’ll feel a burning sensation in your thighs and calves and probably run ahead of your pack. This is how mental play can affect a runner.

Tips

Running cross country is not easy; You need to be prepared for anything in your path. Weather, rocks or holes in a trail, crossing a steep slope or even a stream can all be challenging but fun obstacles. Getting the proper training will give you the strength, stamina and agility to improve your performance.

Unlike on a running track or treadmill, cross country runners need to be versatile and ready for changes in surface, altitude and weather.

One of the most important changes a runner can make is to improve running form or technique to go faster, avoid injury, and recover faster. Running on soft ground will require less stride than running on pavement. Striking the midfoot or forefoot will result in a more stable landing than hitting the heel.

Training

Successfully training for cross country follows the same basic training guidelines that are used when preparing for a road race or long track event. Long and short intervals along with long runs, tempo work, and maintenance and recovery runs are the basic building blocks of training.

For cross country, however, you’ll need to incorporate changes in terrain, altitude, and course that mimic what you’ll encounter on race day. By regularly tackling the types of rhythm breakers that cross country throws at you, you’ll adapt and learn how to make an effort appropriate to the length of the race you’re running. The more course-specific your preparation, the better.

Distance

The IAAF standard distance for international competition is not less than 12,000 m (7.5 mi) for men and 2,000–5,000 m (1.25–3 mi) for women. Due to the varying difficulty of the courses, world records are not set. Cross-country teams are made up of six to nine athletes.
