Hull City produced another impressive result on their return to the Premier League, beating Coventry City 1-0 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Liam Millar scored eight minutes from full time to give Hull their second consecutive league victory and leave Coventry still searching for their first point of the campaign.
Hull City Take Late Victory
The match appeared destined to finish goalless after Coventry had enjoyed some of the better opportunities, particularly during the opening half.
Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis proved crucial, producing several important saves to keep Coventry from breaking the deadlock. His standout moment came before half-time when he stretched to keep out a close-range effort from Taiwo Awoniyi.
Carl Rushworth was also called into action for Coventry as Hull became increasingly dangerous after the interval.
The visitors eventually found the breakthrough in the 82nd minute. Mohamed Belloumi drove forward before releasing Millar, who had space to attack the Coventry defence. Millar made no mistake with his second opportunity of the match, calmly finishing beyond Rushworth to put Hull ahead.
Tzolakis Makes the Difference
While Millar grabbed the winning goal, Tzolakis was equally important to Hull’s success.
Coventry created opportunities through Awoniyi and Loum Tchaouna early in the match, but the Hull goalkeeper repeatedly prevented the hosts from taking advantage.
Awoniyi came particularly close when Tchaouna’s delivery fell into his path, only for Tzolakis to make an outstanding reaction save.
The goalkeeper was eventually named Player of the Match, underlining his contribution to Hull’s clean sheet and victory.
Coventry Pay for Missed Chances
Coventry’s frustration will largely centre on their failure to turn a strong first-half showing into goals.
Awoniyi had multiple opportunities, while Tchaouna also threatened going forward. Coventry continued to push after the break, but Hull’s defensive organisation and Tzolakis’ performance kept Frank Lampard’s side scoreless.
After conceding, Coventry struggled to find an equaliser. Jay Dasilva came close with a late header, but Tzolakis comfortably dealt with the attempt.
Five minutes of stoppage time gave Coventry one final opportunity to rescue a point, but their late efforts came to nothing.
Hull Make Perfect Start
The victory gives newly promoted Hull City two wins from their opening two Premier League matches.
The Tigers had already defeated Manchester United in their first game and followed that result by beating Coventry, another side expected to compete in the same section of the table. Hull moved up to second place, level on points with leaders Manchester City.
For Coventry, the situation is considerably more difficult. Lampard’s team remain without a point and sit 19th after two matches.
The result is particularly disappointing given Coventry’s long-awaited return to home Premier League football. The match marked their first Premier League home fixture in 25 years, but Millar’s late strike silenced the home crowd.
Millar Delivers When It Matters
Millar’s winning goal was even more impressive considering he had missed a promising opportunity shortly before scoring.
With around 15 minutes remaining, the Hull forward had space on a counter-attack but dragged his shot wide. He made amends when Belloumi supplied him during another rapid break, finishing confidently to secure all three points.
Hull forward Oli McBurnie praised the team’s approach after the game, explaining that they expected Coventry to have plenty of possession but believed they could exploit spaces on the counter-attack.
