The Concacaf Nations League got underway with an emphatic opening round as Saint Martin, Montserrat and Aruba all made strong starts in the centralized group stages.
The opening matches delivered plenty of goals, with Saint Martin producing the biggest result of the day after an 8-0 victory over the Bahamas at Bethlehem Soccer Stadium in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Saint Martin Dominate Bahamas 8-0
Saint Martin were the standout team in the opening action, putting eight goals past the Bahamas without conceding.
Axel Raga opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Yanis Montantin doubled the advantage eight minutes later. Jordan Alexandre then added two goals in the 20th and 32nd minutes.
The Bahamas’ difficult first half became even tougher when they scored an own goal shortly before the break, leaving Saint Martin with a commanding five-goal advantage.
Raga completed his hat-trick after halftime, scoring in the 52nd and 63rd minutes. Pierre-Bertrand Arné added another in the 80th minute to complete the 8-0 scoreline.
Saint Martin will now turn their attention to their next Group C fixture against the U.S. Virgin Islands on Saturday.
Montserrat Take Control of Group A
Montserrat also began their Concacaf Nations League campaign with a victory, defeating the Turks and Caicos Islands 2-0 at the TCIFA National Stadium in Providenciales.
Ashley Boatswain was the key player for Montserrat, scoring both goals.
Boatswain broke the deadlock in the 41st minute with a finish from inside the penalty area. He then doubled Montserrat’s lead in the 69th minute with a header from a set piece.
The result puts Montserrat in a strong position in Group A, with another opportunity to extend their lead coming against the British Virgin Islands on Saturday.
Aruba Edge Antigua in Group B
Group B hosts Antigua were unable to begin their campaign with a victory as Aruba secured a late winner at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Saint George.
The result gives Aruba an early boost in the group, while Antigua will now look to respond in their next match against Anguilla on Saturday.
