The 2022 season of college football’s biggest teams gets underway on Saturday. We’ll update this story throughout the day with final scores, highlights and what you need to know from each game.

No. 1 Alabama 55, Utah State 0
Briefly, the top-ranked Crimson Tide started off with an impressive performance to outclass the Aggies 559-136. Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns as Alabama scored in all seven possessions of the first half and led 41-0 at the break.

In short: the Buckeyes were the 17-point favorites, but fell behind at halftime before a comeback victory led by CJ Stroud. The sophomore quarterback hit Xavier Johnson to advance late in the third quarter and played skillfully without injuring standout receiver Jackson Smith-Njigba. Highlights

College football’s first full Saturday came in style with upsets, stellar debuts and statements made by national title contenders. No. 2 Ohio State and No. 5 Notre Dame met in the opening week’s main showdown, with the Buckeyes winning 21-10. Defending national champion No. 3 Georgia also took the field, making a strong statement with a 49–3 victory over No. 11 Oregon. Several notable teams from across the country were also in action on Saturday.

14 was surgical in Lincoln Riley’s first game as USC head coach—a 66–14 home win over Rice. Heisman Trophy candidate Caleb Williams threw for 249 yards, scored two touchdowns through the air and had six carries and 68 yards in his first game since being transferred with the relay from Oklahoma. Admittedly, it was Rice, but it’s been a long time since we’ve seen the Trojan team take care of business like the powerhouse it used to be.

Elsewhere, No. 1 Alabama held a 55-0 shutout over Utah State at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Bryce Young topped the 100-yard mark through air and land, and was responsible for a total of six touchdowns (five running, one passing) in a Heisman-like performance. The defense was also effective, holding the Aggies for 136 yards in the evening.
