Vs Giants:

The Browns beat the heat and the Giants on Sunday.

Despite the absence of several notable starters, the Browns’ 17-13 preseason win over the Giants was not devoid of some drama.

In fact, the game came down to a Hail Mary, as Brian Lewerke’s heave to David Sills was picked off by Browns defensive back Richard LeCounte in the end zone.

Wearing all-white uniforms to combat the heat and humidity, the Browns quickly marched 81 yards in 10 plays on the game’s opening drive. Browns quarterback Case Keenum, after misfiring on a second down throw to Rashard Higgins in the end zone, hit his fourth-down pass to KhaDarel Hodge for a touchdown on what looked like the exact same play. The drive also included 46 rushing yards, 34 of those coming from running back D’Ernest Johnson.

The New York Giants dropped their second preseason contest on Sunday as they fell, 17-13, to the Cleveland Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Browns opened the scoring when, on fourth-and-7 at the Giants’ seven-yard line, Case Keenum completed a seven-yard touchdown to KhaDarel Hodge to take a 7-0 lead at 7:23 in the first quarter to complete a 10 play, 81-yard scoring drive. Defensive back Madre Harper delivered strong coverage but Keenum was able to get it right over his hands to convert the TD.

The Giants responded with a strong scoring drive of their own as a 24-yard pass from Mike Glennon to Rysen John set New York up on the Cleveland 38-yard line. Three plays later, Devontae Booker ran for a 1-yard TD to tie the score at seven with 34 seconds left in the first quarter. Glennon was 6-for-6 on the drive.

Record:

The Browns have won four NFL championships (1950, 1954–55, 1964) and four All-America Football Conference (AAFC) championships (1946–49).

In 1957 Cleveland drafted Syracuse University running back Jim Brown, who would set every major NFL rushing record during his nine-year career and gain the status of possibly the greatest football player of all time.

Cleveland’s plans to pair Brown in the backfield with another remarkable running back from Syracuse, Ernie Davis, winner of the 1961 Heisman Trophy, came to naught when Davis contracted leukemia and never played a game for the Browns. Nevertheless, Brown helped the team reach four league championship games, one of which they won (1964).
