Replacement
According to multiple reports, an official meeting was to take place on Wednesday between the university’s board of trustees and the athletics board to approve the separation. The news was first reported by The Athletic. Although he is only in his fourth season on a seven-year deal with the Cardinals, reports speculate that Monday night’s 64-52 loss to Virginia was his last game in Louisville.”I don’t know what will happen in the future,” Mack told reporters on Wednesday morning. “I’m not bitter. I love these guys, university has been great for me and my family, it was hard to tell my girls. But life is too short to live bitter.” “We all want the best for Louisville, and I still do. That’s not going to change. The important thing is that these people should be able to reconnect and I’m humble enough that if I’m not the right person.” So all is well man. I just wish the best for them.”
Why did get fired
Four years later, Chris Mack is out as head coach of the Louisville Men’s basketball program amid the team’s struggles this season.Louisville is now just 11-9 and 5-5 in ACC games, having lost five of their last six games. Mack took over the program in 2018 and led the Cardinals to the NCAA Tournament in 2019. In 2020, he finished second in the ACC. The team also recently dropped two straight games in Virginia and Notre Dame, which certainly didn’t help Mack’s case.
In addition to his struggles, it appears that he was let go partly because of a scandal with former Louisville assistant coach Dino Gaudio. Originally, Gaudio tried to extort Mack for money after he was canned, and the school eventually suspended Mack for the first six games of this season for alleged program violations.
What did do
Chris Mack arrived in scandal-ridden Louisville as a proven coaching commodity, believed to be able to defuse the chaos and restore a powerhouse to prominence. He left more stir than a trophy case, a failure some saw in the optimistic days of 2018. School and Mack will announce their parting officially and immediately on Wednesday. Tuesday was up to hashing out the details, specifically how much of the buyout it would receive — it would likely be less than half of the $12 million it could have owed. He skipped coaching 99 games at the school, setting a winning record, but became the first full-time coach of a program steeped in tradition after World War II, who won nothing.
