The Philadelphia Phillies fired longtime manager Charlie Manuel on Friday and replaced him with Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg.
Sandberg was promoted to the team’s third base coach and infield instructor last October.
Manuel had been managing the Phillies since the beginning of the 2005 season, and at that time he compiled a record of 780–636.

Charles Fuqua Manuel Jr. (born January 4, 1944), is an American former professional baseball player, coach, and manager. During his playing career, he appeared in parts of six Major League Baseball seasons for the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers, before he played six more seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball with the Yakult Swallows and Kintetsu Buffaloes. In four consecutive seasons in NPB, Manuel hit at least .312 with 37 home runs in each season and won the 1979 Pacific League Most Valuable Player award. Following his playing career, he coached and managed the Cleveland Indians and managed the Philadelphia Phillies, winning the World Series over the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008 and the National League Championship Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2009. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame in 2014. On August 13, 2019, Manuel replaced John Malley as the hitting coach for the Phillies for the remainder of the season.

Looking for a spark to boost their struggling offense, the Philadelphia Phillies are naming former manager Charlie Manuel their hitting coach.
The Phillies announced Tuesday that Manuel will take over after the team relieved John Melli of his duties.
Philadelphia’s offense has been disappointing under Mally. The group ranked 19th in MLB in runs scored, 23rd in slugging percentage and homers, and 23rd in batting average.
Manuel, 75, has been with the organization since 2003, apart from a gap of five months after he was fired as manager in 2013. He had worked as an advisor to the general manager since 2014. Prior to this, he was the team’s manager for nearly nine seasons, leading the franchise to consecutive World Series appearances in 2008 and 2009, including a title in 2008.
In addition to his time with the Phillies, Manuel served as the hitting coach with the Cleveland Indians in 1988 and 1989 and from 1994 to 1999. He also managed the Indians from 2000 to 2002.
Philadelphia is two games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild-card spot in the National League. The team has not reached the playoffs since 2011.

Former Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, who led the club to the 2008 World Series title, suffered a stroke on Saturday.
The club said Manuel, 79, was undergoing a medical procedure in Florida when he suffered the stroke. Doctors were successful in removing the blood clot.
“The next 24 hours will be critical to his recovery and Charlie’s family asks that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers at this time,” the team said in a release.
Under Manuel, the Phillies won five consecutive National League East titles from 2007 to 2011. They defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2008 World Series for the city’s first major professional sports championship since 1983.
Philadelphia won another National League title in 2009 before losing to the New York Yankees in the World Series.
Manuel was fired by the Phillies after the club’s 53–67 start in 2013.
He compiled a record of 1,000–826 as a major league manager, including 780 wins with the Phillies. He was inducted into the team’s wall of fame in 2014. Manuel rejoined the organization that year to serve as a senior advisor to the general manager.
Manuel played six seasons as an outfielder with the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers from 1969 to ’75.
