Charles Johnson, the former NFL wide receiver who played for both Pennsylvania teams at the turn of the century, has died at the age of 50, the University of Colorado, Johnson’s alma mater, announced Wednesday.
The Steelers’ first-round draft pick in 1994, Johnson was serving as the assistant athletic director of Heritage High School in Wake Forest. His death was announced by his employer. In addition to his five-year run at Pittsburgh, he spent two seasons with the Eagles and won Super Bowl XXXVI as a member of the Patriots.
According to ABC 11 (WTVD), Raleigh police were called on Sunday afternoon to Spring Forest Road, about 20 minutes from Wake Forest, where they found Johnson in a hotel. The cause of death has not been announced.

WNCN-TV in Raleigh reported Wednesday that police found a body in a hotel room on Sunday during a welfare check at the Hampton Inn & Suites and that preliminary investigations showed no signs of disturbances.
Johnson was selected 17th overall by Pittsburgh in the 1994 draft. He spent five seasons with the Steelers, two with Philadelphia, helped New England win the Super Bowl in the 2001 season, and ended his career with Buffalo in 2002.

Charles Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL in a statement released by the Panthers on Wednesday. Johnson had one year left on his contract.
Johnson played at Carolina throughout his 11-year career. The Panthers selected Johnson in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft along with fellow Panthers Jon Besson, Ryan Kalil and Dwayne Jarrett.
The 31-year-old defensive end played a key role in several of Carolina’s playoff teams, including the 50 group that lost in Super Bowl 2015. Johnson missed nearly half of the 2015 regular season with a hamstring injury, but returned to form in the post season where he made three sacks and seven tackles in three games.
