Every club in Europe wants to win the UEFA Champions League but only the elite can do that. It is certainly important to be the top dog in your country, but the ultimate goal is to be the champion of Europe. Of course, the name of this contest doesn’t adequately describe it. Most of the participating teams are not champions of their own country. There may be group games in the beginning but since the last sixteen it has been a knock-out tournament and that means anything can happen.

Last season had its usual thrill and culminated in an all-English final. Chelsea won the trophy for the second time in their history by defeating Manchester City in the final. Manchester City were in their first Champions League final, but fell short. They will be the main contenders to eventually become European champions. Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona PSG and Juventus will dethrone Chelsea.

During the 90th minute of Real Madrid’s stunning 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain last week, Lionel Messi held the ball down outside the penalty area in the center of the pitch for a free kick. It was the kind of kick we’ve seen Messi score for countless times, and PSG need a goal and extra time to tie the match on aggregate. You can’t help but wonder what This would be Messi’s latest example of magic.

Meanwhile, from 10 yards away, Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema built a wall with his teammates. Benzema scored all three Madrid goals in 17 minutes, one of the most heroic performances in recent memory. Then, as Messi stepped up and put his foot through the ball, Benzema jumped into the air, trying to block the kick with his face. He would fail, but luckily for him and his teammates, Messi’s kick slid over the crossbar, and Real Madrid would hold on for the win.

A lot of blame is flying around why PSG failed again in the Champions League, and everyone has their theories and people. My feelings are very simple. The difference between PSG and Real Madrid was that, with the game on the line, Real Madrid’s superstars were ready to block a shot with their faces if it had to do so in order to win. PSG stars hardly bother to back down and defend when shots are blocked from their faces. That’s the difference, and therefore PSG will not be able to win the Champions League with this current roster.
